Assistant Professor in Power Electronics (201732)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Energy Technology a position as Assistant Professor in Power Electronics is open for appointment in the period 01.11.17 - 31.10.20 or soon hereafter. The Department of Energy Technology is an expanding department covering most fields of Energy Technology ranging from Electrical Energy, Power Systems, Power Electronics and Electrical Machines to Thermal Energy including Energy Systems, Fluid Mechanics and Combustion but also Mechatronic Systems. The department has about 250 employees – out of them are more than 100 PhD students. The laboratory-facilities are world-class and the research carried out is most often in collaboration with industry. The position is offered in relation to the research program "Efficient and Reliable Power Electronics" and the assistant professor will be positioned to the section for Power Electronic Systems.

Job description

Research areas will cover topics in the field of power electronics, with specific focus on reliability-oriented design and modelling of power electronics components. The target components may include high power IGBT modules, wide-bandgap (WBG) power devices, heatsinks, fuses, etc. The applicant is further expected to work with multi-physics simulation and modelling of such components. A successful application prerequisite that the applicant demonstrates a documented expertise in most of the areas below:

  • Power electronic components and their design in applications like renewable energy systems and motor drives.
  • Design and optimization of power modules in respect to reduction of temperature and electrical parasitics.
  • Design and optimization of cooling systems for high power converters.
  • Reliability study on fuses used in power circuits.
  • Electrical, thermal, and mechanical multi-physics simulation of power electronic components/circuits based on Finite-Element Methods (FEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
  • Reduced order electro-thermal and thermo-mechanical models for power electronic components.
  • Modelling of abnormal operation in power electronic components.
  • Experimental work and validation of simulation models.
Experience in teaching and supervision.

Teaching obligations will primarily be carried out in the study programmes in Energy, in the areas of Power Electronics, Thermal Modelling and Implementation on Bachelor and Master level. The position also includes collaboration with external partners from industry and academia, research work related to external projects as well as supervision of Ph.D. students.

Qualification requirements:

Appointment as an Assistant Professor presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.

Appointment as an Assistant Professor cannot exceed a period of four years in total in a temporary position (appointment at Assistant Professor level cannot exceed a period of eight years in total in Denmark).
