PhD Stipend in Integrating smart production through MES/ERP systems (915-19056)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Materials and Production (Section for Production) a PhD stipend is available from September 1, 2019 or soon thereafter. Department of Materials and Production (MP) is a wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department’s mission is to meet the future’s demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding, materials’ applications in mechanical constructions, industrial production and management. The department has several strong, international and innovative research groups which comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applicable research. The activities encompass research as well as education within materials, mechanics, physics, production technique and industrial management and innovation. Benefitting the industry and additional collaborators several innovative and unconventional collaborations have been and are developed through interdisciplinary co-operations. Job description

The PhD position will be an integrated part of the Innovation Factory North project, which has the overall objective of developing and empirically testing Industry 4.0 solutions for the purpose of advancing the capabilities in manufacturing companies. The objective is pursued through developing multiple industrial experiments on creating awareness, demonstrators, and anchoring new solutions in industrial settings. The PhD position is offered in collaboration with University College of Northern Denmark (UCN), and the candidate is expected to contribute to the knowledge base of both AAU and UCN. The candidate is expected to have shared workplace between AAU and UCN Technology campus.

In this context, the candidate is expected to perform fundamental and applied research on understanding how an agile MES/ERP platform can support integrating different solutions in order to create an end-to-end smart production system. This entails integration of the MES/ERP systems to become the central repository of data and the platform for the new functionalities, which will provide a basis to support an agile and rapid development cycle. In this project new approaches and methodologies to support agile solution development and prototyping of the processes are explored.

The position builds on continuous contact and collaboration with the business community in order to achieve and test knowledge.

Applicants to the PhD position must hold a Master of Science (MSc) degree in engineering/ computer science, or similar from an internationally recognized University or they expect to have obtained the above-mentioned type of Master's Degree before 31 July 2019. We are looking for highly motivated candidates with the following qualifications: 

  • A good knowledge of enterprise information systems and approaches to planning, executing and optimizing manufacturing operations
  • Previous experience with experimental research within manufacturing companies will be considered an advantage.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and international environment as an independent researcher.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in Danish and English.
  • Commitment, dedication, enthusiasm and ability to work efficiently both as a part of a team and independently.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
