PhD Stipend in Phase Equilibrium Thermodynamics (18-17010)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, a PhD stipend is available within the general study programme Biotechnology, Chemistry and Environmental Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 August 2017 or soon thereafter. The stipend period is 3 years. The Department consists of five sections, of which three are located in Aalborg with research and teaching in Biotechnology, Applied Chemistry, Environmental Technology and Biology; one in Copenhagen on Sustainable Biotechnology; and one in Esbjerg on Chemical Engineering. The place of employment of the PhD position is the Section of Chemical Engineering in Esbjerg. The section offers three study programs on bachelor and master levels within Chemical Engineering and Oil & Gas Technology and research activities comprise phase equilibrium thermodynamics, high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) processes, nanoparticle production, spectroscopy and data analysis, environmental engineering, and fungal biotechnology. Within Oil & Gas Technology, the section collaborates with the Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre.

Job description

In the Section of Chemical Engineering a PhD stipend is available with the provisional title "high-pressure phase equilibrium and volumetric properties of mixtures of carbon dioxide with crude oil and brines". The focus of the PhD is both on collecting laboratory experimental data and on developing computational models for this complex type of mixtures. Laboratory work will be based on a new state-of-the-art high-pressure fully-visual variable-volume cell, which allows the application of different high-pressure phase equilibrium measurement techniques, besides PVT characterisation. The computational part will be aimed at improving existing techniques for lumping and characterisation of crude oil, and thermodynamic models for predicting PVT and high-pressure phase equilibrium behaviour of these mixtures. Improving knowledge in this area relates to improving modelling of oilfield processes, geothermal processes, and carbon capture.

Applicants to the PhD scholarship must hold a Master of Science (MSc.) degree in Chemical Engineering, Oil & Gas Technology, Petroleum Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or similar from an international recognized University or they expect to have obtained the above-mentioned type of Master's Degree before 31 July 2017.
We are looking for highly motivated candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Practical experience with experimental research within one of the following areas: chemical engineering, oil & gas, chemistry, physical chemistry.

  • Practical experience with computational aspects of thermodynamics (preferable).

  • Practical laboratory experience dealing with high-pressure equipment (preferable).

  • Master thesis project on high-pressure phase equilibrium thermodynamics (preferable).

  • An excellent level of both spoken and written English.

  • Good collaborative skills, team spirit and the ability to work independently.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Engineering and Science, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
