One or more PhD Stipends within Radio Resource Management (RRM) for 5G (8-17057)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, one or more PhD stipends in advanced Radio Resource Management (RRM) for 5G is available within the general study programme Wireless Communications. The PhD study will be conducted in close cooperation with Nokia Bell Labs in Aalborg. The stipends are open for appointment from September 1, 2017, or soon thereafter

Job description

Beyond enhanced mobile broadband, 5G is set to deliver improvements in new dimensions, enabling new use cases and services. Ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) is one of the prominent new use case families aiming at latency below 1ms with a reliability of better than (1-10^-5). How to most efficiently multiplex the diverse type of 5G services n, and in particularly the instrumental RRM solutions remains an open research question. Main duties for the position are:

•Design and optimization of novel RRM solution for 5G - especially with focus on novel enablers for the URLLC use cases. This may include: service multiplexing, packet scheduling and grant free access, link adaptation, power control, HARQ,…..
•Analysis of optimal RRM solution differences and performance for URLLC depending on whether FDD or TDD, licensed vs unlicensed bands are used.
•System level performance assessment by means of simulations, potentially coupled with input from experimental testbed measurements.

The candidate is expected to have knowledge and experience within

•Wireless access networks, with some understanding of radio propagation, PHY and MAC, related protocols, and end-to-end service delivery aspects.
•Knowledge of 3GPP Radio Access Networks such as LTE and the upcoming 5G New Radio is an advantage.
•Experience with performance analysis and system-level simulations, including software programming skills (MATLAB and C++), is an advantage.
•A high level of written and spoken English is expected.

You may obtain further information from Professor Preben Mogensen, Department of Electronic Systems, phone: phonenumber (+45) 4050 3573, email: pm@es.aau.dk  concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT adn Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
