PROFESSOR POSITION AT IFM – Centre for Blue Governance (60231)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Planning, a position of Professor in Marine Governance and Marine Spatial Planning is open for appointment from first of August 2018 or soon thereafter. PLAN conducts research and teaching on development and planning in a broad sense, including social science aspects as well as more technical aspects of development, and with a focus on environmental, international as well as administrative dimensions. The professor will be located in the city of Aalborg, Denmark. Internally within the University, the position will be linked to the research center IFM – Centre for Blue Governance. The aim of the Center is to contribute to an in depth understanding of marine governance structures and processes at sea and in coastal areas and to design and develop (integrated) governance arrangements to govern marine activities and to control their consequences. This will be done in close cooperation with partners within and outside AAU.

Job description

The professor will be head of the planned new IFM - Centre for Blue Governance at AAU. This entails forming the academic profile of the centre and establishing the centre as a leading entity internationally. Therefore, the successful applicant will have a proven track record of undertaking research on marine governance, especially (1) the institutionalization of traditional and innovative governance arrangements at the level of European regional seas, (2) in depth understanding of the governance dynamics of different maritime regime complexes and the changing role of states at sea, (3) in depth understanding of processes of eco dynamic development and design of marine infrastructural projects, and (4) in depth knowledge of transnational Marine Spatial Planning and the role of power, technology and knowledge in marine spatial planning processes. Applicants working on transnational and critical approaches of Marine Spatial Planning will be especially welcome. The successful applicant will have ample experience with attracting external funding and publishing at international level in this field.

 

Administration and Research Management

The professor, as head of the IFM - Centre of Blue Governance, will guide the members of this centre in terms of project funding strategies and attracting research funding. The successful applicant will therefore have experience with research management of a project entailing a supervisory capacity for multiple academics at different levels (e.g. PhD students, post docs). Furthermore, the successful applicant will demonstrate an ability to obtain external funding for his/her own research as a principal investigator as well as an ability to support the search for external funding for operating the IFM - Centre for Blue Governance. Applicants with knowledge and experience of EU funding and projects will be especially welcome.

Teaching and Supervision

As head of centre the professor will also have a role in developing courses and taking part in teaching related to the centre’s activities. The applicant must therefore be a committed teacher with a proven track record of teaching and supervising at BA, MA and PhD levels. It will be considered an advantage if applicants have experience with problem-based learning which is Aalborg University’s pedagogical model.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

It is presupposed that applicants can document a high degree of original scientific production at an international level, and can document having contributed considerably to the development of the fields of marine governance, marine spatial planning processes and marine infrastructural projects (such as harbours; wind mill parks, etc.). Furthermore, applicants must account for their potential to further develop the domain of marine governance. Emphasis will be placed on the applicant's ability to perform research management and other management functions, provide pedagogical guidance as well as supervision and take part in academic assessments. Special emphasis will be placed on the potential of the applicant to undertake the specific projects related to this position, cf. job description. In terms of personal qualities, the applicant is expected to have strong interpersonal skills, and to be able to establish and maintain good relations with researchers in an international environment characterised by cultural diversity.

Additionally, the candidate should meet the following qualifications requirements:

  • Having a PhD degree in a relevant social scientific discipline;
  • Several years of experience in EU marine governance research
  • Is acknowledged as an international expert in the field;
  • Is a prominent member of international marine governance networks;
  • Having a thorough understanding of processes of institutionalization of marine governance arrangements and Marine Spatial Planning processes;
  • Has experience with attracting and working on externally funded research projects, such as EU Horizon2020;
  • Experience with successful supervision of PhD and MSc students;
  • Be able and willing to contribute to a multidisciplinary research environment;
  • Ample teaching experience;
  • Familiarity with problem-based learning;
  • A solid list of peer-reviewed publications;
  • Excellent English skills and willingness to learn Danish.

Agreement

Appointment and salary acc. to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of professional Associations (AC) on Academics in the State. Employment as Professor is in accordance with a classified position on scale 37. In addition, a pensionable increment will be given.
