Postdoc in Data-Driven Optimization of Massive and Ultra-Reliable Wireless IoT Systems

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a position as Postdoc in Data-Driven Optimization of Massive and Ultra-Reliable Wireless IoT Systems is open for appointment from September 1, 2018, or soon hereafter. The position is available for 12 months, with a possibility to be extended.<br /><br />The Department of Electronic Systems is one of the largest departments at Aalborg University with a total of more than 250 employees. The department is internationally recognized in particular for its contributions within Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The research and teaching of the Department of Electronic Systems focus on electronic engineering and the activity areas are organized in the sections: Antennas, Propagation and Millimetre-wave Systems section (APMS), Automation Control section (Control), Connectivity section (CNT), Signal and Information Processing section (SIP), Wireless Communication Networks section (WCN) and Communication, Media and Information technologies (CMI).The department focuses on maintaining a close interplay with the university’s surroundings - locally, nationally and internationally – as well as producing unique basic research and educating talented and creative engineers. The department collaborates with leading ICT researchers all over the world.

Job description

We seek to appoint a PostDoc to take part in research and knowledge exchange in the research project WILLOW, which is an ERC Consolidator Grant in the area of massive and ultra-reliable communication, as well as the other projects that the Connectivity Section carries out with industrial partners.

Compared to the previous generations of wireless systems, 5G has an increased focus on Internet-of-Things (IoT) connectivity. Specifically, two of the three generic 5G services, massive MTC (mMTC) and Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) are related to IoT. Traditionally, the design and optimization of communication systems are based on statistical models, which becomes highly suboptimal with the increase of the complexity of the networks, heterogeneous services and massive number of connections. Therefore it becomes necessary to base the optimization on data analysis and machine learning techniques.

WIthin this postdoctoral position, the candidate will work with data-driven models to optimize the operation of wireless IoT systems. It will be focused on, but not limited to the emerging 5G systems. As example, data-driven approaches can be applied to optimize the exchange of control information in protocols or integrate the communication protocol with the proces of mining of the data stream that comes from the IoT devices. We seek candidates with the following profile:

- Ph.D. in communication engineering, signal processing, or machine learning.

- Research track record proven through publications in top journals and conferences, such as the ones from IEEE and ACM.

- Willingness to work a the intersection of communication engineering and machine learning.

- Readiness to interact with industrial partners and engage in collaborative projects.

- Profficiency in data analysis with MATLAB, Python, C, or similar.

Industrial collaboration, teaching experience, as well as experience from collaborative multinational projects can be considered as a plus.

Qualification requirements: 
Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
