Want to shape the future of university teaching with artificial intelligence? At the Department of Materials and Production, Aalborg University, we are looking for a Research Assistant to design and build an AI-powered education platform, from concept to classroom deployment. You will work hands-on with large language models, develop a full-stack prototype, and evaluate its impact through a real controlled study with students, all within a small, collaborative project team with direct access to the principal investigator.
The position is temporary for 12 months, at 37 hours per week (full-time), with a desired starting date of 1st July 2026.
Your work tasks
You will join a funded education project that designs, builds, and evaluates an AI-powered platform for education. The platform will be piloted in a real university course and assessed through a controlled study, with the goal of producing a working open-source prototype. Specific tasks include:
Software development:
- Design and implement the AI for education platform, from front-end interface to back-end services and database.
- Integrate large language model APIs and related AI services to power the teaching and tutoring components.
- Build infrastructure for logging student interactions in a privacy-compliant manner (GDPR).
- Deploy and maintain the system on university infrastructure.
Your competencies
Required:
- Strong programming skills in at least one modern web or backend language; ability to work across the full stack.
- Practical experience building and deploying applications, including working with APIs and databases.
- Hands-on experience with large language models or other generative AI tools in a development context.
- Experience with quantitative or mixed-methods data analysis.
Preferred:
- Background in educational technology, human-computer interaction, or learning analytics.
- Familiarity with multi-agent AI systems or conversational AI development.
- Experience with retrieval-augmented generation or similar context-aware AI techniques.
- Experience as a teaching assistant or in an educational setting.
Qualification requirements
Appointment as a Research Assistant requires academic qualifications at master's degree level in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Human-Computer Interaction, Educational Technology, or a closely related discipline.
The position is open to all nationalities. Applicants must hold a valid right to work in Denmark at the time of appointment.
Who we are
The Department of Materials and Production has an active international research environment with projects spanning robotics, IoT, machine learning, and manufacturing systems. Research is conducted in close collaboration with industry partners and within AAU's distinctive Problem-Based Learning model.
This position is embedded in a small, focused project team. You will have direct access to the project PI, regular feedback.

Salary and terms of employment

There is a mutual probationary period of 3 months for the position.
