One or more PhD Stipends in Quantification of perceived quality of sound fields with dynamic relations between listener and source positions (8-18078)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, one or more PhD stipends are open in Quantification of perceived quality of sound fields with dynamic relations between listener and source positions within the general study Programme Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The fully funded stipend is open for appointment from November 1, 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description

The introduction of metadata or “audio objects” in programme material (see ITU-R BS.2088-0, ITU-R BS.2051-0 and ISO-IEC_23008-3) means that it will be possible to increase the complexity of the reproduction system to include rendering of moveable sound objects in domestic and public environments. Alongside, augmented and mixed reality systems (AR and MR) can provide the user with complex static or dynamic sound scenarios that blend with real world sound.

The objective for the PhD project is to develop experimental paradigms that can produce objective Sound Quality or Quality of Experience data for different scenarios e.g.:

  1. Static listener position with a static position of sound sources (base line setup),
  2. Fixed listener position with dynamic positions of audio objects,
  3. Dynamic listening position (e.g. the listener moves around in the room) and dynamic positions of audio objects.

The project is a collaborative effort between Aalborg University, Bang & Olufsen a/s and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. The project will primarily take place at the Section for Signal and Information Processing (SIP), Department of Electronic Systems, Aalborg University with secondments at Bang & Olufsen and Nanyang Technological University.

The research activities conducted in the SIP section span from theoretical to experimental work, including among others algorithm design, scientific computing, deep learning, measurement and evaluation methodologies, and end-user testing. The application areas are rich in diversity and cover in our current research portfolio for example; acoustics, audio processing, communications technology, hearing aid research, human sound and video perception, image and video processing, multimedia technology, user experience design using biometric sensors, social robots and speech processing.

The successful applicant must have a Master’s degree in EE including human perception of sound, sensory analysis of complex auditory stimuli, statistical analysis of sensory data, signal processing for multimedia technology or similar. Excellent undergraduate and master’s degree grades are expected. A high level of written and spoken English is also expected.

You may obtain further information from Professor Søren Bech (phone: +45 30930243, email: sbe@es.aau.dk ) or Associate Professor Flemming Christensen  (phone: +45 9940 8708, email: fc@es.aau.dk ), Department of Electronic Systems, concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

Augmented Reality (AR): In a real-world environment whose elements are augmented (overlays) by computer-generated (CG) sensory input (sound, video, data). However, the real-world content and the CG content are not interacting.

Mixed Reality (MR): Merging of real and virtual worlds to produce new environments (physical and virtual objects co-exist and interact in real time).

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design will decide for allocating the stipend.

For further information about stipends and salary as well as practical issues concerning the application procedure contact Lisbeth Diinhoff, The Technical Faculty of IT and Design, email: ld@adm.aau.dk,  phone: +45 9940 9589.
