A Postdoc position in regional dynamics and disparities

The postdoc position is part of a research project on regional (territorial) imbalances in Denmark and is conducted within the framework of Centre for Research on Regional Dynamics and Disparities (REDY, see The research project focuses on mapping and identifying the sources of regional economic growth, on patterns and motives of settlement, and on mapping and assessing the impact of localization of public services and administrative bodies. In addition to these three major strands, the project will also provide a mapping and an explanation of regional inequality – a classic but somewhat under-prioritized aspect of social inequality and cohesion.

The tasks of the postdoc are focused on the third strand (public services and administrative bodies), and on the analysis of regional inequality. This will include a variety of research methods, from quantitative analyses of data from surveys and administrative registers, to analyses of the decision making networks and processes. “Regional policies” will include not only the explicit regional policies, but also policies in other fields with significant impact on regional dynamics and disparities, as well as the coordination between the “visible” and “invisible” regional policy. 

The research will be conducted in close cooperation with other senior and junior researchers on the project, first and foremost with those working on the same parts of the project. However, it should be underlined that the different strands are strongly linked. The project is cross-disciplinary and seeks to combine insights from political science and sociology, economics and economic geography, planning studies, and other traditions. 

The postdoc will be a key person in collecting data, and in analyzing and communicating the results in cooperation with the other researchers on the project. The postdoc must have competence in quantitative data analysis. Experience with policy analysis and a relatively broad range of social science theories and methods is an advantage. 

In addition to being a member of the project group and the Centre REDY, the post doc will be part of the Centre for Comparative Welfare Studies (CCWS) at the Department of Political Science, Aalborg University. CCWS is an interdisciplinary and comparatively oriented research group, working with a broad range of issues related to the functioning, the performance, the challenges and patterns of reforms of modern welfare states.

Qualification requirements 
Candidates must have scientific qualifications at PhD level. In the selection of candidates, emphasis will be placed on research potential and pedagogical qualifications as well as experience with supervision and lectures. To a limited extent other tasks may occur in the position.

Moreover it will be an advantage, but not a prerequisite, that applicants have experience with Problem Based Learning (PBL) which is Aalborg University's teaching philosophy.
