One or more PhD Stipends in Cyber Security Testing (8-19046)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, on or more PhD stipends in Cyber Security Testing is available within the general study programme Wireless Communications. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 August 2019 or soon hereafter, and the selected candidate can choose to be based in either Aalborg or Copenhagen.

Job description

More and more systems and devices are being connected to the Internet. This creates not only new opportunities, but also new threats including the risks of cyberattacks. Internet of Things (IoT) devices differ from traditional computers in several ways including:

  • Limited computational capacities
  • Patching possibilities can be limited or cumbersome
  • New possibilities for abuse, especially when physical systems and cyber systems are integrated (cyber physical systems)

Moreover, the threat picture regarding the devices is highly dependent on the context the devices are used in. These differ from home equipment such as IP cameras and coffee machines, to industrial production environments (Industry 4.0).

While a lot of work has focused on securely designing IoT devices and cyber physical systems, not much research has been conducted on methods for security testing, where even researchers often limit themselves to using standard tools such as those included in the Kali Linux toolbox and online tools such as Shodan without reflecting on their effectiveness and suitability. This provides the background of this PhD position, which aims at developing methods for cyber security testing of different Internet-connected devices with a particular focus on Internet of Things, Industry 4.0, etc. The ambition is to develop methods, which holistically cover security testing process; from reconnaissance and analyzing threats, to technical security testing (including penetration testing). The applicability of these methods is then to be tested on selected use cases from industrial partners. The PhD project also covers the development of testing and training scenarios, which can be implemented in virtual training environments and will be used for demonstrating how the methods work.

The project is funded through a number of smaller projects related to cyber security testing and/or training, so the candidate should be comfortable working with multiple partners.

The successful candidate should have top marks, extensive knowledge of cyber security, and preferably experience with security testing (penetration testing, Kali Linux, Metasploit, etc.). Applicants for the PhD position should hold a relevant Master's Degree in Engineering or Computer Science.

You may obtain further information concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend, from Associate Professor Jens Myrup Pedersen, Department of Electronic Systems, phone: (+45) 9940 8771, email: jens@es.aau.dk .

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT adn Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
