Associate Professor in Solid and Computational Mechanics

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Materials and Production (MP), a position as Associate Professor in the Solid and Computational Mechanics Group is open for appointment from 1st of April 2020. Department of Materials and Production (MP) has a wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department’s mission is to meet the future’s demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding, materials’ applications in mechanical constructions, industrial production and management. The department has several strong, international and innovative research groups which comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applicable research. The activities encompass research as well as education within materials, mechanics, physics, production technique, and industrial management and innovation. Benefitting the industry and additional collaborators several innovative and unconventional collaborations have been and are developed through interdisciplinary co-operations. Thereby, as an employee at the Department you will become a part of an international research environment, where focus is on innovation, knowledge sharing/building and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Job description

The research area of the associate professor will be within the field of Solid and Computational Mechanics - especially experimental characterization, analysis, and predictive simulation of damage in structural fibrous composite materials.

Teaching will primarily be in the bachelor programme "Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing", the specialization "Design of Mechanical Systems" on the master programme "Mechanical Engineering", and PhD-courses related to Solid and computational mechanics, but also in other study programmes at the University.

The associate professor will be associated with the department’s group within solid and computational mechanics. The activities of the Solid and Computational Mechanics Group encompasses fundamental aspects of solid and computational mechanics, with a special research focus on advanced finite element modeling and other computational techniques, advanced optimization techniques, vibro-acoustics and noise, analysis, design and experimental characterization of advanced lightweight composite and sandwich structures, and finally computational modeling, design and experimental validation of complex mechanical systems.

The associate professor is expected to expand this activity level. Also, the department has a strong tradition for industrial cooperation and for entrepreneurship exploiting their research results, and the associate professor is expected to continue this tradition. The department owns or has access to state-of-the-art facilities for computational mechanics, as well as state-of-the-art laboratories and workshops facilitating experimental characterization and validation of materials and structures across length scales. 

The associate professor is expected to enrich and expand the continuous research activities in the Solid and Computational Mechanics Group within damage mechanics for structural fibrous laminated composite materials. This will in particular be in relation to:
  • State-of-the-art analysis and simulation of progressive damage evolution of advanced lightweight composite structures subjected to static and fatigue loadings.
  • Analytical and numerical analysis methods for fracture mechanical problems.
  • Constitutive modeling of crack propagation laws in composites.
  • Cohesive zone modeling by the finite element method.
  • Crack propagation fatigue models for laminated composites. 
  • Experimental characterization of fracture mechanical properties for composite materials.

Qualification requirements: 

The level of qualification for Associate Professors shall correspond to the level, which can be achieved on the basis of the appointment as Assistant Professor, but may be achievable in other ways. The appointment presupposes that the applicant can demonstrate original scientific production at an international level as well as documented teaching qualifications. Appointment to the position requires that both research and teaching qualifications are at the requested level. The two qualifications will be given equal and principal priority in the overall assessment.
