Assistant Professor in Robotics (tenure-track)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a position as Assistant Professor in Robotics is open for appointment from September 1, 2020 or soon hereafter. In the area of electronics engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the societal relevance of its research programmes. The Department of Electronic Systems employs more than 200 staff, of which about 40% are international, and about 90 enrolled PhD students. The Department hosts 620 students. The Department's excellent research infrastructures and facilities accentuate its global position in teaching and research. Department research centres around communication, antennas, control systems, signal processing, cybersecurity and acoustics. The Department plays an active role in translating discoveries and results into practical applications with industrial partners and IPR. Within its own subject field, the Department provides teaching for several BSc and MSc programmes using a problem- and project-based learning model.

Job description

We seek to appoint an Assistant Professor in Robotics. The selected candidate will join a team of academics with a comprehensive research and teaching portfolio in the area of robotics and control engineering.

The position requires research experience in at least one of the following areas:

  • Autonomy for mobility and manipulation
  • Human-centered robotics and automation
  • Manipulation and grasping
  • Planning, motion, force and compliance control
  • Cognitive robotics
  • Multiple and distributed robotics systems
  • Mechatronics

The main tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Research, including publication of results and supervision of research students
  • Teaching within robotics
  • Acquiring research funding and coordinate funded projects
  • Strengthening of our relationship with private industry partners within the field


The candidate is appointed for a period of six years, with the prospect of performance-based advancement to a tenured position.

The aim of the tenure-track position is to attract talented young scientists. Tenure-track positions give the possibility for promotion to a tenure position as Associate Professor

The tenure track assistant professor’s duties will primarily include research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations. To a limited extent the position may also include other duties.

The university carries out a mid-term evaluation by an internal assessment committee to review the progress of the tenure track candidates after 3 years. The final tenure review is conducted after five and a half years with an assessment committee. If the review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor at Aalborg University.

Qualification requirements:

Appointment as an Assistant Professor presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.

Appointment as an Assistant Professor cannot exceed a period of four years in total in a temporary position (appointment at Assistant Professor level cannot exceed a period of eight years in total in Denmark).

The selected candidate has demonstrated research talent and recognition at the international level within the field; has proven international research collaboration (e.g. joint papers and projects); and a record of teaching qualifications.

A link to your unique research identifier (Web of Science Researcher ID or Scopus Author ID) which allows your publication and citation record to be studied.

The application must contain the following: 

  • A statement outlining your reasons for applying, and intentions and visions with, the position.
  • Your curriculum vitae, including personal data, educational background, scientific qualifications, dissemination skills, participation in committees and boards, and additional qualifications relevant for the position.
  • Copies of relevant diplomas (Master of Science and PhD). On request you could be asked for an official English translation.
  • A complete list of publications.
  • Publications you wish to be considered by the assessment committee. You may attach up to 5 publications. 
  • A specification of your teaching qualifications relative to the teaching portfolio. If this is not enclosed you must include an explanation for its absence.
  • References/recommendations.

An assessment committee will assess all candidates.

Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics.
