One or more PhD Stipends in Control Theory (8-20044)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, one or more PhD stipends in Control Theory are available within the general study programme Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The stipends are open for appointment from September 15th 2020, or soon as possible thereafter.

Job description

Swift project:

The PhD position(s) are funded by Poul Due Jensens Fond in the project SWIFT. In short, the research focus of the SWIFT is on the control of complex systems (also coined large-scale systems). Profound examples are smart infrastructures, including smart water systems, wind farms, and smart grids.

The PhD student will have the opportunity to ground base for the research within complex systems and to test the theoretical results and research hypotheses on a realistic yet safe infrastructure-setup – newly built Smart Water Infrastructure Lab. The Water-Lab is designed to emulate both water supply, wastewater, and district heating networks. Though the Water-Lab can emulate three types of systems, the focus will be on water distribution.

PhD project:

The PhD student will consider optimal control based on dynamic programming (DP) and reinforcement learning (RL). The objective is to introduce barrier certificates into DP and RL to provide safety guarantees.  Subsequently, the PhD student will build a RL framework leaning on the structure of the actual water networks to be controlled (e.g., the number of tanks, valve, and pumping stations). The structure should be seen as an alternative to a general neural network, and it is assumed that the incorporated model knowledge will make the algorithm converge to the optimal controller considerably faster. The system is still considered data driven as only the model structure is used; therefore, it can only be tested on data in the Smart Water Infrastructure Lab.

You may obtain further information from Rafael Wisniewski, Department of Electronic Systems, phone: +45 29 13 36 23, email: raf@es.aau.dk , concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT adn Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

For further information about stipends and salary as well as practical issues concerning the application procedure contact Ms. Lisbeth Diinhoff, The Technical Faculty of IT and Design, email: ld@adm.aau.dk , phone: +45 9940 9589.
