PhD Stipend/Integrated PhD stipend in optimization of insect production for animal feed through breeding (18-20049)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, a position as PhD student in ‘Insect breeding’ is open for appointment from 1 September 2020 or soon thereafter. The stipend is available for 3 or 4 years depending on whether the applicant already holds a Master’s degree. Applicants who hold a Master’s degree can apply for a 3 year position and applicants who has finished 4 years of full time studies but do not hold a Master’s degree can apply for a 4 years PhD stipend (Integrated PhD stipend). The Integrated PhD stipend is open for appointment with starting date 1 September 2020. The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience consists of five sections of which three are situated in Aalborg with research and teaching in Biology & Environmental Science, Biotechnology, and Applied Chemistry, one in Copenhagen on Sustainable Biotechnology and one in Esbjerg on Chemical Engineering. The PhD position is located within the section of Biology and Environmental Science with working place primarily in Aalborg.

Job description

The PhD student will be working on a project on optimization of insect production for animal feed through breeding that we have recently obtained funding for from the Independent Research Fund Denmark (https://www.bio.aau.dk/nyheder/vis-nyhed/to-originale-id-er-fra-kemi-og-biovidenskab-faar-stoette-fra-dff.cid470493). This project is a collaborative effort between Aalborg and Aarhus Universities and Universities in the Netherlands (Wageningen) and USA (Texas). Along with the current PhD position at Aalborg University, another PhD position financed by the same project is announced at Aarhus University. Close collaboration between the two PhD students and the team of researches involved is expected in the project. This also means that both PhD students will be expected to spend time at both institutions throughout their studies.

The PhD student(s) will be working on providing the knowhow needed to optimize production of high quality protein for food and feed based on insects. This can include topics such as screening insect species and diet types to detect species with high potential for production of protein, develop a sustainable breeding program for this species, select for important production traits and assess regions of the genome explaining variation in traits of interest. Close interaction between the two PhD students and their supervisors are expected and should be facilitated by the PhD students.

We seek a candidate with a strong interest within some of the topics entomology, physiology, evolutionary biology, and quantitative genetics and genomics. Specific tasks of the chosen candidate can to some degree be tailored to her / his interests and expertise.

The PhD student is expected to engage in some teaching within the area and will follow courses according to the university’s PhD programme. As part of the PhD it is expected that the candidate spend at least 6 month abroad, likely in laboratories of our collaborators at Wageningen or Texas Universities.

You may obtain further information from Professor Torsten Nygård Kristensen by e-mail: tnk@bio.aau.dk  or phone +45 61463375
concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

Based on whether the successful applicant already holds a Master’s degree he/she will either receive a regular PhD stipend (3 years) or an Integrated PhD stipend (4 years).

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. Integrated PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who has not yet completed a Master’s degree and who wish to begin the PhD study in connection with the Master study. Thus, a prerequisite for acceptance is that the candidate is enrolled in a relevant Master’s programme.

The integrated stipend consists of two parts, A and B. During part A you are enrolled simultaneous in the Master’s programme and in the PhD programme. The stipend consists of two SU-PhD Grants per month (SU=The Danish students’ Grants and Loans Scheme). One SU-PhD grant equals DKK 6,243.- (2020 level). SU-PhD Grants are paid for a maximum of two years. When the Master’s degree has been obtained, you will be employed for two years as a PhD fellow according to the present collective agreement. Part B has a maximum duration of two years.

It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed regularly. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
