Assistant Professor in Wireless Communications for Industrial IoT

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a position as Assistant Professor in Wireless Communications for Industrial IoT is open for appointment from February 1, 2021, or soon hereafter. The position is available for a period of three years. In the area of electronics engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the societal relevance of its research programmes. The Department of Electronic Systems consists of more than 200 people, of which about 40 % are international, and about 90 are enrolled PhD students. The Department hosts 620 students. The Department's excellent research infrastructures and facilities accentuate its global position in teaching and research. Department research centres around communication, antennas, control systems, signal processing, cyber security and acoustics. The Department plays an active role in translating discoveries and results in practical applications with industrial partners and through IPR. Within its subject field, the Department provides teaching for several BSc and MSc programmes using a problem- and project-based learning model.

Job description

We are looking for an Assistant Professor to join our team in the section Wireless Communication Networks (WCN), which performs research and teaching within the domains of wireless communications and network security.

The position requires internationally recognized research experience and skills in at least one of the following areas:

  • State-of-the-art knowledge in relevant wireless technologies for industrial IoT
  • Design of novel technologies towards the 6G communication era
  • Radio channel measurements and modelling for relevant industrial IoT use case scenarios
  • Interaction and optimization of wireless technologies towards industrial protocols/applications
  • Wireless performance optimization, potentially including aspects for AI/ML
  • Experimental research to validate the performance and reliability of wireless applied to various real-time industrial applications (I4.0, drones, autonomous mobile robots, IoT, etc.)  

Research domains: You will work in a larger research team involving colleagues from within the WCN section, but also external partners and other sections, departments and faculties interacting across multiple disciplines.

Current relevant research topics and responsibilities for the position in the WCN section include:

  • Running the 5G Smart Production Lab in collaboration with Department of Materials and Production
  • Evolution of beyond 5G Rel. 16 for industrial applications
  • ML/AI native air interface design towards 6G
  • Requirements and design for life critical sub-networks
  • Cover the uncovered by Non-Terrestrial-Networks    

The position involves:

  • Research in the aforementioned areas
  • Management and coordination of research activities
  • Writing applications for research funding
  • Involvement in (and development of) collaborations with industrial partners, and public and private stakeholders.
  • Teaching and assessment of students (bachelor, master, PhD)

Teaching (based on the PBL model) will be mainly within BSc/MSc study programmes in courses related to Electronics, IT, Computer Technologies, and Communication Technologies, but also flexible to other study programmes at the university. Supervision of BSc/MSc is also expected (presentation of research area etc.).

It is required that you have a Ph.D. in either Telecommunication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science with a focus on wireless communications or a related discipline.

it is an advantage if you have documented previous teaching experience. You should be able to demonstrate research activities within several of the abovementioned research areas, have experience with experimental research, and show motivation to advance research activities on future concepts. Finally, you are able to coordinate and supervise junior researchers working on various aspects of the Industrial IoT.

Qualification requirements:

Appointment as an Assistant Professor presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.

Appointment as an Assistant Professor cannot exceed a period of four years in total in a temporary position (appointment at Assistant Professor level cannot exceed a period of eight years in total in Denmark).

Employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance's current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics.
