At the Department of Culture and Learning, Aalborg University, a professor position is available as of August 1 2021 or shortly thereafter. This is a permanent full-time position that includes research, teaching and research management.

Job description

Applicants must demonstrate a strong profile in terms of empirical work, teaching and dissemination within the field of migration studies. A position, which focuses on the role of migration in contemporary societies and how societies deal with such issues politically. This requires knowledge and comprehensive research experience on migration, policy and institutions. Likewise it will have focus on the reactions and social mobilizations emerging in civil society to migration related issues. It covers different areas and topics such as understanding migrant precarity and precarisation, critical policy studies, understanding institutional responses on different scales, e.g. the municipal, studies on alternative forms of solidarity and inclusion in the accommodation of migrants and refugees.

For appointment as a professor, the ideal candidate is expected to have a strong international publication profile and have demonstrated the ability to obtain external funding of research within the field of migration studies. It is expected that applicants have experience with research management and development of research groups, including supervision of younger researchers. The position should make a substantial contribution to the development of the departments study programmes – especially the master's degree programme in Culture, Communication and Globalization and be able to contribute in a positive and constructive manner to the overall activities and working environment of the Department of Culture and Learning.

It is presupposed that applicants can document a high degree of original scientific production at an international level, and can document having contributed considerably to the development of the subject area of the job description. Furthermore, applicants are required to account for their potential to further develop the subject area. Emphasis will be placed on the applicant's ability to perform research management and other management functions, experience with obtaining external funds of strategic importance and take part in academic assessments. Special emphasis will be placed on the potential of the applicant to undertake the specific projects related to this position, cf. job description.

In relation to teaching, the applicant is expected to document experience in the management and development of study programmes. To have experience, competences and achievements demonstrating the ability to provide the highest-level instruction within the area of the Culture, Communication & Globalization programme, with various pedagogical considerations and approaches, including supervision, conducting seminars, lectures etc. To provide pedagogical guidance as well as supervision of PhD students and younger researchers.

At Aalborg University our learning approach is problem-based learning (PBL). Documented experience with this learning approach is therefore preferred.

The applicant is expected to document the ability to teach, supervise and assess both written and oral presentations in Danish. Alternatively, the ideal applicant is expected to acquire relevant linguistic competence within an agreed timeframe.

The position is primarily affiliated with the research group Democracy, Migration & Society (DEMOS) that has a range of research interests within the following main areas:

  • migration, mobility and diversity
  • participation, transformations and collective identities
  • democracy and rights in their contemporary and historical context.

In terms of personal qualities, the applicant is expected to have solid cooperative abilities as well as the ability to create and maintain productive relationships with researchers of various research and cultural backgrounds. A national as well as an international network is thus preferred.

Daily attendance in the department is required. In addition, applicants should be prepared to actively participate in all aspects of the day-to-day activities of the department and study programmes. The position of professor is a permanent position with obligation to research, teaching and publication/academic dissemination.

Applicants to the professorship are required to provide documentation of a substantial amount of original scientific production at international level, and documentation of significant contribution to the development of the research area in question. It is equally important that applicants are able to undertake research management or other kinds of management, pedagogical counselling and supervision as well as academic assessment tasks.

  • In case the applicant attaches publications elaborated ind collaboration with co-authors, a co-author statement must be enclosed, specifying the applicant's contribution to the joint work. The co-author statement must be signed by at least one of the co-authors Template co-author declaration

  • Copies of relevant diplomas (Master of Science and PhD)

All candidates will be assessed by an assessment committee. Applicants may subsequently be summoned to an interview and/or trial lecture.

This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not. The selected applicants will be informed of the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will have the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that applies to the applicant in question. When the employment process has been terminated, a final rejection will be sent to the applicants who are not considered for the position.

Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics. The first 3 months of your employment is a trial period.
