Associate Professor of Collaborative Design in Design Engineering

University of Aalborg, Copenhagen, offers a unique opportunity for an Associate Professor of Collaborative Design in Design Engineering; a field of high interest in Department of Planning. At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Planning, Copenhagen, a position as Associate Professor of Collaborative Design in Design Engineering is open for appointment from September 1, 2021 or soon hereafter. At Department of Planning, we have about 200 employees situated at the Aalborg and Copenhagen campus. The department provides excellent research and teaching in the field of planning, technology and society in order to create a more sustainable future. We are interdisciplinary in the technical, natural and social science disciplines and present a unique combination of social and technological understanding where digital and technological solutions merge with the needs of society. Our research creates the foundation for educating the young people of tomorrow, and as part of Aalborg University, the department rests on a socially engaging and problem-oriented approach. It is also at Department of Planning that the UNESCO Center for Problem-Based Learning is at home. That helps ensure, we create educations aimed at the job market and a society with increasing focus on technology, digitization, sustainability and partnerships for a sustainable transition. The Department of Planning is currently strengthening its teaching and research activities within engineering design. We invite applicants eager to contribute the Department’s vision of developing and sharing knowledge on designerly approaches  to the Sustainable Development Goals concerning health and well-being, clean energy, and responsible consumption and production. The Associate Professor will become part of an interdisciplinary research group – Design for Sustainability – that explores how design approaches and methods can contribute to sustainable change. The research group shares a sociotechnical understanding of innovation; an understanding which emphasizes the interdependencies and mutual shaping of the social (people, policies and politics) and technology. The group’s research complements engineering design and conceptualisation in product design with insights from Science and Technology Studies.

Job description

Within the Department of Planning, the Design for Sustainability research group has a number of focal areas: staging of collaborative design, designing sustainable engineering; circular economy as and by design; valuation studies and the role of expertise.  Key research focus points in the applicant’s research could be:

  • Design of material objects
  • Co-design of sustainable products and services including circular economy
  • Co-design across diverse knowledge domains (for example IT systems, health services etc.)
  • Front-end innovation and design

The applicant for the position as associate professor is expected to further strengthen the research group’s work in the area of collaborative design in Engineering Design and take a leading role in this development.

The candidate has to be able to inspire and guide her or his fellow researchers. It is expected that the candidate has experience in acquisitioning external funding from competitive sources within the European Union (e.g. Horizon 2020, the European Research Council) and/or national research councils.

The ideal candidate should document substantial experience in:

  • Research with regard to publications, grant acquisition and national/international research collaboration
  • Teaching, including curriculum development
  • Outreach activities contributing to the goals of the institutions at which the applicant has been employed

The Associate Professor is expected to teach core courses in collaborative design and staging of design processes in the bachelor and master programmes of the engineering education Sustainable Design. The majority of the teaching tasks at the undergraduate levels are in Danish, whereas teaching at the graduate levels may be in English or in Danish. Therefore, you are expected to learn Danish, within a reasonable period of time.The Associate Professor is likely to have other teaching obligations as well, e.g. in the Technical Faculty of IT and Design’s PhD programme.

Qualification requirements: 

The level of qualification for Associate Professors shall correspond to the level, which can be achieved on the basis of the appointment as Assistant Professor, but may be achievable in other ways. The appointment presupposes that the applicant can demonstrate original scientific production at an international level as well as documented teaching qualifications. Appointment to the position requires that both research and teaching qualifications are at the requested level. The two qualifications will be given equal and principal priority in the overall assessment.

  • A current curriculum vitae.
  • Copies of relevant diplomas (Master of Science and PhD). On request you could be asked for an official English translation.
  • Scientific qualifications. A complete list of publications must be attached with an indication of the works the applicant wishes to be considered. You may attach up to 10 publications.
  • Teaching qualifications described in the teaching portfolio.  If this is not enclosed the applicant must include an explanation for its absence.
  • Dissemination qualifications, including participation on committees or boards, participation in organisations and the like.
  • Additional qualifications in relation to the position.
  • References/recommendations.
  • Personal data.

Employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance's current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics. The first 3 months of your employment is a trial period.
