Postdoc in Separation of Crude Oil and Produced Water in the Presence of Production Chemicals (2021-224-03414)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, a position as Postdoctoral Researcher in Separation of Crude Oil and Produced Water in the Presence of Production Chemicals is open for appointment from 1. August 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter. The duration of the position is 18 months. The Department consists of five sections of which three are located in Aalborg with research and teaching in Biotechnology, Chemistry, Environmental Technology and Biology, one in Copenhagen on Sustainable Biotechnology and one in Esbjerg on Chemical Engineering. Place of employment is the Section of Chemical Engineering in Esbjerg. In the workplace, we strive for diversity in nationality, culture, and gender, growth as a team effort, maintaining an inspiring physical work environment, and ensuring a good work-life balance.

Job description

The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience advances regional, national and global knowledge build-up, while contributing to the solution of societal challenges through innovative research, problem-based education and knowledge-based collaborations. We produce excellent research in engineering and natural science and Aalborg University constantly ranks top of the World within engineering research and education. The Section of Chemical Engineering has a clear goal of being the go-to partner for regional, national and international industries in need of research based knowledge and support for transition of classic chemical production to sustainable and more bio-based production processes and promote the green transition of society.

This postdoctoral position is announced as part of the project called “Oil Water Separation in the Presence of Production Chemicals” funded by the Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre (DHRTC) with the aim of understanding the side-effects of production chemicals, used for various purposes in offshore oil and gas production, which can interfere with the oil-water separation in topside gravity settlers. This research project is part of the research program “Produced Water Management”, which was started in 2020 at DHRTC with the aim of reducing the environmental impact related to the management of offshore produced water.

The new postdoctoral researcher should investigate the oil-water gravity separation in the presence of various production chemicals in use in offshore oil and gas industry by developing analytical protocols for quantitative analysis of the kinetics of the separation, highlighting patterns and trends as a function of different chemicals, and developing sound physical models for capturing the effect of different chemicals on the separation. Example of such models are based on modifications of the Stokes’ Law, including terms for representing the coalescence of droplets of the dispersed phase.

Tasks will include the execution of laboratory experiments and chemical analyses, as well as modelling of the oil-water separation process on the basis of the experimental results. Close collaborations with research groups from both DHRTC and other partner institutions involved in the same research program, is expected.

The successful applicant must hold a PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Separation Process Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Physical Chemistry or equivalent educations. The candidate should document solid practical experience with laboratory work in the areas of phase separation and/or phase equilibria, broad insight in chemical analysis, as well as some experience with modelling. As the position is part of a collaborative research program, the candidate should show excellent interpersonal and communication skills and team spirit to solve the problems together with the different stakeholders.

You may obtain further information on scientific aspects of the position from Associate Professor Marco Maschietti (Aalborg University), phone +45 9940 7647 or mail marco@bio.aau.dk; and Professor Simon Ivar Andersen (DHRTC), phone + 45 9351 0758 or mail simand@dtu.dk
