One or more PhD Stipends in Intelligent Hybrid Light Weight Tendon Based Arm Exoskeleton for Severely Disabled Individuals (21-21014)

Job description

This job advertisement concerns a PhD study, which will focus on an Intelligent Hybrid Light Weight Tendon Based Exoskeleton Arm for Severely Disabled Individuals. The position is placed with the Department of Health Science and Technology (HST), which carries out multidisciplinary research, teaching and dissemination within rehabilitation robotics, biomedical engineering, sports science, and medicine. The department has more than 250 employees and is responsible for more than 1200 students. More than 160 PhD students are enrolled in the doctoral school affiliated with the department. The researchers are organized in a number of research groups and centres, and the department has at its disposal laboratory and clean room facilities for 3D movement analysis, robotics, tongue computer interfacing, brain computer interfacing, sensory and motor functions analysis, etc. All study programmes at Aalborg University involve problem-based learning organized around cases and projects. Translational research in rehabilitation robotics and human machine interfacing is the focus of the research group Neurorehabilitation Robotics and Engineering at HST. This group develops new robotic and assistive technologies including exoskeletons for rehabilitation of individuals with neurological impairments related to e.g. spinal cord injuries, stroke and ALS. Further, the group studies the implication of the technologies within neurorehabilitation including studies of the induced neuroplasticity. As part of this research, the group performs human experimental studies and clinical experimental studies in collaboration with clinicians and industry.

The related lab includes several commercial and research-based robots e.g. the EXOTIC exoskeleton, the CarbonHand and the JACO and soon the iARM and, in addition, technologies to measure tongue movements, EEG and EMG. Further, there is equipment to facilitate AI/semi-automation of robotics devices through e.g. vision and for the application of functional electrical stimulation in conjunction with e.g. wearable robots. The successful applicant(s) should investigate the design and implementation of a rehabilitative and assistive light weight tendon-based exoskeleton. The work will include 3D printing of e.g. carbon-based exoskeleton parts, design of metal parts, construction of the exoskeleton and implementation of actuators and control system for tendon-based control, taking user requirements related to e.g. aesthetics, biomechanics and pathology into account. Further, the PhD student will collaborate in integrating novel non-invasive tongue interfaces and brain computer interfaces into the control system of the exoskeleton arm.

There will be close collaboration with one other PhD student and three other postdocs within this larger project frame.
Experience with human experimentation, rehabilitation robotics and/or exoskeletons is considered an asset.

The successful candidate(s) for the PhD stipend holds a master degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, or equivalent with the prospect of pursuing studies on Light Weight Tendon Based Exoskeletons for disabled individuals.

A high proficiency in oral and written English is required. Good dissemination skills are important.

As part of the application, the applicant is requested to submit a "project description", which is a suggestion for a PhD project within the topics mentioned above. This project description should include: Background, problem statement, project activities/methods for problem solution, and a time schedule e.g. by using a Gantt Chart.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School in Medicine, Biomedical Science and Technology in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
