Postdoc in Multi-Function Antennas for Large-Scale Array Systems

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a position as postdoc in Multi-Function Antennas for Large-Scale Array Systems is open for appointment from July 15th, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for 12 months. The Department of Electronic Systems consists of more than 200 employees, of which about 40 % are international and about 90 are enrolled PhD students. The Department hosts 620 students. The Department's excellent research infrastructures and facilities accentuate its global position in teaching and research. The Department's research centres around communication, antennas, control systems, AI, sound, cybersecurity and robotics. The Department plays an active role in translating discoveries and results into practical applications with industrial partners and IPR. The Department provides teaching for several BSc and MSc programmes using a problem- and project-based learning model.

Job description

In future wireless communication systems, centimeter-/millimeter-wave (cm-/mm-wave) antenna arrays especially large-scale arrays will be highly implemented with multi-functions for fitting flexible requirements. For the large-scale arrays such as phased arrays and massive MIMO arrays, the mutual coupling among antenna elements should be suppressed to a very low level to keep the system being stable. Otherwise, the active impedance matching would be significantly deteriorated. Besides, nonlinear effects caused by the strong coupling would lead to significant nonlinear distortions on power amplifiers and decrease the operation bandwidth of the systems. It is still a challenge to accommodate the issues.

Furthermore, facing the demand for miniaturization due to the limited physical space, highly integrations between large-scale antenna arrays and essential microwave components/parts to realize multi-functions attract growing attention, such as filtering, harmonic suppression as well as full-duplex communication. Aiming to these requirements, it is essential to combine antenna theory with microwave circuit/network theory to achieve the desired performance.

The successful candidate should have extensive knowledge in centimeter-wave and millimeter-wave antenna arrays for large-scale array systems as well as passive microwave components including power splitters and filters. Applicants with proven publication records are desirable, especially in high ranking IEEE Trans. journals. Further, a strong background in antennas, microwave components, numerical simulations, and experimental implementations is expected. Applicants for the Postdoctoral position should hold a relevant Doctoral Degree. A high level of written and spoken English is also expected.

Qualification requirements: 

Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.

Employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance's current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics.
