The position is opened within the Section of Marine and Environmental Engineering, which conducts research and teaching in marine and environmental engineering, water pollution, hydrology, and physical geography. The position is associated with the Urban Pollution Research Group. The Department of the Built Environment (BUILD) focuses on the technical and scientific disciplines within the built environment. Research areas span from Indoor Environment and Energy Efficient buildings, Wind Turbines, Structural Design, Structural Materials, Geotechnical Engineering, Wave Energy to Traffic along with many other areas. The research is conducted in a national as well as an international research environment. The department takes on contract research for both public institutions and private companies. Job description

The research is within the area of microplastic studies, a topic on which three tenure staff, three postdocs, nine PhD students, two research assistants, and two technicians at the moment are working. The main research of the assistant professor will be on microplastics in the environment with focus on quantification at sources, occurrence in the environment, and fate. The research will address a range of matrices, however with focus on the sediments and waters of aquatic environments, especially related to urban runoff. An important part hereof is analyzing and improving designs for urban and highway runoff pollution mitigation methods so that for example retention ponds can be better designed and engineered towards retaining microplastics. The research will furthermore cover analytical method development and improvement for this emergent pollutant. It is crucial that the candidate has experience with urban water engineering, urban hydrology, and urban runoff treatment systems in addition to microplastics quantification techniques.

An important part of the research is the improvement of methods for microplastic extraction from complex matrixes such as muddy sediments. Another part is on further developing the subsequent analysis of the extracted particles applying µFTIR imaging, targeting plastics down to a few micrometers in size. Here the focus is on analyzing and interpreting the big data which is produced by the µFTIR imaging. The applicant must have experience with microplastics analysis under clean and controlled conditions as well as experience on interpreting data obtained by µFTIR imaging.

We have a modern and well-equipped chemical lab for various environmental studies. The equipment we use for microplastic analysis is Agilent’s flagship for micro‐FTIR imaging, two 620 FTIR microscopes combined with Cary 670 FTIR spectrometers, equipped with 128x128 pixel FPAs. We furthermore have a Frontier Lab pyrolyzer coupled to a GC-MS, a Renishaw micro-Raman Spectrometer and a wide suite of supporting equipment.

Teaching will primarily be in Engineering within water and environment and natural geography, but also in other study programmes at the University. The successful candidate must document relevant teaching experience for similar curricula.
