At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Materials and Production a position as postdoc in design of an active knee replacement implant is open for appointment from January 1st, 2022 or soon thereafter. The position is available for a period of 3 years Department of Materials and Production (MP) is a wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department's mission is to meet the future's demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding, materials' applications in mechanical constructions, industrial production and management. The department has several strong, international and innovative research groups which comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applicable research. The activities encompass research as well as education within materials, mechanics, physics, production technique, and industrial management and innovation. Benefitting the industry and additional collaborators several innovative and unconventional collaborations have been and are developed through interdisciplinary co-operations. Job description

Research will be part of the SPARK project (Smart Personalized Adjustable Replacement of the Knee) funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark.

The research project:

Knee osteoarthritis is a frequently occurring joint disease that causes pain, joint deformity, reduced quality-of-life and walking disability. At advanced stages, joint replacement, so-called total knee arthroplasty (TKA), may be necessary. Although TKA is generally considered successful, 16-30% of patients are dissatisfied. There are multiple causes for this, but some of the most frequent reasons for revision are instability and joint stiffness. During surgery, the surgeon attempts to balance the surrounding soft tissue in order to stabilize the knee joint. However, this approach is highly subjective and limited by intraoperative constraints. To mitigate these issues, the aim of this project is to develop a postoperative adjustable implant that can balance the stability and stiffness of the joint following surgery by incorporating actuators and electronics into the implant. The amount of adjustments required will be informed based on 3D laxity measurements performed by other staff members of the project and the finale design will be evaluated in cadaver studies. The project has two external partners: Materialise, Belgium and KU Leuven, Belgium.

The postdoc project:

The purpose of the PostDoc project is to develop the adjustable knee implant and test it in a cadaver study together with the project partners. This will include designing, selecting and manufacturing the mechanical and electronic components and, therefore, requires skills within both mechanical and electronic design.

The research will be performed in close collaboration with Materialise, who are experts in additive manufacturing in general and custom implants for various medical applications, and KU Leuven that have extensive cadaver facility for conducting the tests of the implant. Both Materialse and KU Leuven are located in Leuven, Belgium and extended stays in Leuven should, therefore, be expected during the project.

Required qualifications

  • Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasised in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
  • To be eligible, your PhD age cannot be more than four years counted from the date of obtaining your PhD degree to the application deadline of this job post. The four years can be extended with the length of eventual parental or illness leave, military service or humanity help work. For parental leave, the PhD age can be extended by the actual number of leave months multipled by two.
  • You are a highly motivated individual who is able to work in a small team and who is prepared to stay with the other partners for extended periods of time.
  • You have a scientific qualifications at PhD–level in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, robotics, or equivalent.
  • You have experiences with electromechanical system design.
  • You have to be fluent in English both oral and written.

Desired qualifications

  • You have experiences with implant design
  • You have experiences with knee biomechanics and in particular knee instability
  • You have experiences with cadaver experiments

Limited teaching within the area can be expected, but also in other study programmes at the University.
