One or more PhD stipends in a new method for indoor radon measurements to improve indoor climate in multi-storey dwellings (6-21012G)

At the Facualty of Engineering and Science, Department of the Built Environment at Aalborg University (Copenhagen) a PhD stipend is available within the general research programme Civil Engineering in Research Group of Heating Ventilating and Air-Conditioning. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 August 2021 or soon thereafter.

Job description

The purpose of the project is to demonstrate in practice that radon level control in homes, using sensors and a new advanced data processing software, can improve the indoor climate. The aim of the project is to choose a highly reliable sensor technology to make real-time measurements of radon (less than an hour period) and to develop algorithms to model radon levels together with other sensors, i.e. CO2, relative humidity, temperature, pressure differences and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and integration to control of the ventilation in the building. In the project, we will document, design, build a prototype and verify the concept and technology.

You may obtain further information from Professor Alireza Afshari, Department of the Built Environment, phone: +45 23479387, email: aaf@build.aau.dk concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

To apply, please send the following documents (in English, pdf format):

  • Motivation letter (max 1 page) outlining your qualifications and motivation to conduct this project
  • Project plan (max 2 pages) addressing your understanding of the project’s problem and expected challenges, as well as your ideas to overcome them
  • CV including a list of scientific outputs (e.g. thesis, projects, papers, etc.) and contact info for two academic references
  • Copy of MSc diploma*
  • Copy of Master thesis (in any language)*
  • List of exams with ECTS and grades
  • Recommendation letter (1 page)

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree in Computer/ Electrical Engineering, and has in-depth knowledge and experience on sensor related technologies and their uses in the building services systems. The PhD student will work on close collaboration with industry and will therefore work closely with a team of highly skilled engineers in the fields of sensor development, embedded software and data science from the R&D company ReMoni. To ensure a strong working environment and support, the student will have a desk and access to the lab at ReMoni. ReMoni is located in Skanderborg south of Aarhus. The majority of the work will be done physical at ReMoni, and the PhD student will be co-supervised by the engineers and data scientists at ReMoni.

PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Program at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
