At the Department of Culture and Learning, Aalborg University, a vacant position as Assistant Professor in Applied Philosophy is available from 1 October 2021 or as soon as possible after this date. This is a 3- year full time position that includes both research and teaching activities.

Job description

Applied philosophy actively relates to and engages with issues relevant to society, where different areas of practice constitute the subject of research, often in collaboration with actors within the current areas of practice. The position as assistant professor is aimed at one of three areas: digitalization, democracy or sustainability. Philosophical theory and method constitute the basic approach to these areas.

Interaction with society should be explicit in the form of (planned) collaborations with external actors. 

The ideal candidate is expected to conduct research in an area relevant to the teaching areas of Applied Philosophy at Aalborg University and the Centre for Applied Philosophy research group. The ideal candidate will be expected to conduct research and publish outputs of an internationally recognised quality. The ideal candidate will also be expected to engage with research networks and external stakeholders to enhance the impact of their research and/ or teaching.

For appointment as an assistant professor, the ideal candidate is expected to: 

  • Teach, supervise and examine students in the BA and Master's program in Applied Philosophy
  • Research and publish in recognized journals
  • Participate in international research networks for collaborations
  • Collaboration for research applications
  • Engage in knowledge exchange with broader society
  • Contribute to the daily collaboration in relation to research and education, which relates to the Department of Culture and Learning, including especially Applied Philosophy 

In relation to research, the applicant is expected to document: 

  • A research profile in one of the three areas mentioned above with a solid emphasis on applied philosophy.
  • Collaboration or plans for collaboration with the outside world (including non-university partners).
  • A research plan that focuses on how the applicant's research in the next three years is to be developed in relation to applied philosophy.

 In relation to teaching, the applicant is expected to document:

  •  Experience with and competencies in relation to teaching philosophy at university level and a teaching portfolio with pedagogical-didactic considerations.
  • At Aalborg University our learning approach is problem-based learning (PBL). Documented experience with this learning approach is therefore preferred, but is not a prerequisite 

In relation to teaching, the position is affiliated primarily to the BA and Master's program in Applied Philosophy. However, it may also include teaching obligations in other programmes at the Department of Culture and Learning. Moreover, the ideal candidate will be required to undertake project supervision at different year levels. The language of teaching and supervision is Danish.

In terms of personal qualities, the applicant is expected to have strong interpersonal skills and to be able to participate in team teaching as well as the planning of teaching and research activities with colleagues. In addition, the applicant will be required to establish and maintain good relations with colleagues and students from different backgrounds. The ideal candidate will be expected to participate actively in all aspects of the day-to-day activities of the Department of Culture and Learning and the Culture and Centre for Applied Philosophy research group.

Assistant professorship
A position as assistant professor is a fixed-term training position which includes an obligation to carry out research and teaching activities. To a limited extent, additional tasks may be defined by the University. The appointment includes a requirement to attend a course in university pedagogy for assistant professors organised by the University.

The employment as assistant professor must not exceed a total period of four years at the same institution (a maximum of six years at assistant professor level at AAU and a maximum of eight years at assistant professor level in Denmark). 

Applicants for the assistant professorship are required to possess academic qualifications; for example a PhD degree or similar academic qualifications.

  • A complete publication list and markings of the attached publications to be taken into consideration in connection with the assessment. No more than five publications may be attached.
  • In case you attach joint, a co-author statement must be enclosed specifying your contribution to the joint work. The co-author statement must be signed by at least one of the co-authors. Template co-author declaration

  • Copies of your degree certificates (including Master’s and PhD certificates) 

Applicants will be assessed by an expert assessment committee. Applicants may be invited to an interview and/or asked to give a trial lecture.

This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not. The selected applicants will be informed of the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will have the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that applies to the applicant in question. When the employment process has been terminated, a final rejection will be sent to the applicants who are not considered for the position.
