PhD in Biofuels Production from Waste Biomass (14-21061)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Energy Technology a PhD stipend is available within the general study program Energy Technology. The stipend is open for appointment from 1st September 2021 – 31st August 2024.

Job description

Aalborg University contributes to the knowledge building of the global society as well as the development of prosperity, welfare and culture of Danish society. This is accomplished through research, research-based education, public sector services and knowledge collaboration. AAU educates students for the future and activities are based on a dynamic and transformative collaboration with the surrounding community.

The Department of Energy Technology is a dynamic engineering research department in continuous growth and inspiring surroundings. The department has a very international environment and covers all areas of clean and sustainable energy systems of the future within electrical, thermal and mechatronic energy technology.
The department has campuses in both Aalborg and Esbjerg.
The mission is to be world leading in both research and research-based education of the energy engineers of the future. The department has approx. 300 employees of many nationalities, of which 24 are administrative staff. In addition, the department constantly has approx. 50-70 guest researchers from around the world.
Research and teaching are in the absolute world elite in the field of energy, and we have extensive and leading workshop and laboratory facilities, where research and innovation are carried out in direct collaboration with industry to a great extent.

The position is offered in relation to the research program "Biogas and biorefineries" and the PhD Student will be positioned at the Esbjerg Campus of Aalborg University.

The PhD project will be part of a large collaborative Horizon 2020 project called FELXI-GREEN FUELS. The FELXI-GREEN FUELS project aims to advance the production of next generation liquid biofuels for shipping and aviation from sustainable resources by developing and improving integrated technologies for a complete conversion of second generation (2G) types of feedstocks such as lignocellulosic residue biomass and the organic fraction of municipal waste.

The PhD project will include chemical characterization (HPLC, GC-MS, ICP-MS) of the biomass feedstocks and process streams. The biomass will be converted using physio-chemical pre-treatment followed by enzymatic hydrolysis of the biomass to yield fermentable sugars. Two different microbial systems using fungus and bacteria will be explored to convert the biomass sugars to biofuels.

The applicant must have experience with the chemical characterisation methods mentioned above as well as basic microbial cultivation and characterisation techniques.

”The applicant must provide and upload a proper project description, which describes the applicants initial thoughts and ideas related to the specific project applied for. This includes a brief state-of-the-art (including short list of references), a time schedule and how the applicant intends to shed light on the project objectives. The project description should have a length of 4-5 pages.”
