PhD stipend within Immunology (21-21060)

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Health Science and Technology, Medical Microbiology and Immunology, a three year position as a PhD stipend within immunology is open for appointment from 1 September 2021 or soon thereafter.

Job description

Department of Health Science and Technology carries out multidisciplinary research, teaching and dissemination within biomedical engineering, sports science and medicine. The department has more than 250 employees and is responsible for more than 1700 students. More than 100 PhD students are enrolled in the doctoral school affiliated to the department. The researchers are organized in a number of research groups and centres, and the department has at its disposal laboratory and clean room facilities for cell growth, molecular biology, brain analysis, 3D movement analysis, respiratory and circulatory examinations, sensory and motor functions analysis, etc. All study programs at Aalborg University involve problem-based learning, organized around cases and projects. For more, see: www.hst.aau.dk.

As The Faculty of Medicine wishes PhD positions to enable careers both within and outside the university, the vacant positions are created in such a way that the competences achieved in the position will qualify for both a research career and a career in the commercial and/or public sector. At least a year before the position expires, you will be offered an interview to clarify your future career.

Project description:
The applicant will participate in the research project "Investigations on novel dendritic cell-targeting vaccines against cancer" in the Laboratory of Immunology.

Dendritic cells (DC) play a crucial role in the adaptive immune response. They decide, not only if an adaptive immune response should be initiated or not, but also the type and strength of the response. Consequently, a huge research effort is carried out to device ways of exploiting this knowledge in new forms of therapy.
In this project tumour antigens and activation stimuli are directed towards dendritic cells in situ. We have developed a new DC-targeting vaccine cassette by genetic engineering, and the present PhD project aims at improving our vaccine expression system, testing the vaccine in murine cancer models and participating in the development of a vaccine for human use. Experience with of molecular biology techniques will be an advantage.

The project is an integrated part of the vaccine development programme in the Laboratory of Immunology and will be carried out in collaboration with people working on other aspects of the research program. The research of the laboratory mainly focuses on immunotherapy of cancer and comprises both basic research in cell cultures and mice and clinical research in collaboration with the Aalborg University Hospital and external collaborators.

The PhD project will be supervised by associate professor Ralf Agger and associate professor Emil Kofod-Olsen.

The PhD student will also have to participate in teaching. Most of this teaching will consist of supervision of groups of students working on short experimental projects in the laboratory.

Qualification requirements:
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a master's degree. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School in Medicine, Biomedical Science and Technology at Aalborg University (https://www.phd.medicine.aau.dk/). The tuition fee for the three years of study is covered for the person hired.  According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed and approved every six months.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. Based on the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

The facility, the city, and the surroundings:
Lab facilities are good and spacious and there is access to all necessary equipment and a state-of-the-art rodent facility.

The Faculty of Medicine at Aalborg University is young and still expanding. In the coming years, the Aalborg University Hospital will move from central Aalborg to new buildings adjacent to the university. This is expected to increase the collaboration between the two institutions.

Aalborg is a lively city situated on the banks of the Limfjord offering many possibilities within leisure, sports, and culture. Northern Jutland is beautiful with lots of varied nature. Wonderful, sandy North Sea beaches can be reached in about half an hour.
