PhD Stipend in Self-learning Artificial Intelligence Lifetime Time Prediction in Smart Batteries (14-21064)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Energy Technology a PhD stipend is available within the general study program Energy Technology. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 November 2021 or soon thereafter. The position is for 3 years.

Job description

Aalborg University contributes to the knowledge building of the global society as well as the development of prosperity, welfare and culture of Danish society. This is accomplished through research, research-based education, public sector services and knowledge collaboration.

AAU educates students for the future and activities are based on a dynamic and transformative collaboration with the surrounding community.

The Department of Energy Technology is a dynamic engineering research department in continuous growth and inspiring surroundings.
The department has a very international environment and covers all areas of clean and sustainable energy systems of the future within electrical, thermal and mechatronic energy technology.

The department has campuses in both Aalborg and Esbjerg, this position is located in Aalborg.

The mission is to be world leading in both research and research-based education of the energy engineers of the future.

The department has approx. 300 employees of many nationalities, of which 24 are administrative staff. In addition, the department constantly has approx. 50-70 guest researchers from around the world.
Research and teaching are in the absolute world elite in the field of energy, and we have extensive and leading workshop and laboratory facilities, where research and innovation are carried out in direct collaboration with industry to a great extent.

The position is offered in relation to the research program "Battery Storage Systems" and the PhD Student will be positioned to the section for “Section B - Power Electronics System Integration and Materials”.

The PhD stipend is supported by the Villum Investigator Project – Center for Research on Smart Battery (CROSBAT).  CROSBAT is an innovative interdisciplinary project aimed at transforming battery systems by adding artificial intelligence and controlling rest time at the cell level.
For applications in electric cars, data in the cloud will be used to retrain the original model for the life of the batteries online to customize and improve it.
The project will be able to promote both the electrification of the transport sector and the use of batteries for energy storage in homes, which will reduce production costs and CO2 emissions. At the scientific level, the project will have a major impact by redefining the very philosophy behind battery systems. This will make the control independent of the chemical structure of the battery cells and make it possible to balance aging effects, increase fault tolerance and have battery systems that are modular in terms of both energy and data.

The main tasks of this PhD position are to develop lifetime prediction algorithms based on artificial intelligence and big data for performance and lifetime maximization of smart batteries.

The applicant must provide and upload a proper project description, which describes the applicants initial thoughts and ideas related to the specific project applied for. This includes a brief state-of-the-art (including short list of references), a time schedule and how the applicant intends to shed light on the project objectives. The project description should have a length of 4-5 pages.

The ideal applicant must have an MSc degree in electrical engineering and should demonstrate research/educational background in preferably all the following:
- Artificial intelligence for battery state estimation
- Lifetime prediction of Lithium-ion batteries using artificial intelligence
- Battery health indicators
- State-of-health estimation and management of Lithium-ion batteries
