Department of Health Science and Technology in the Regenerative Medicine group, Faculty of Medicine at Aalborg University, one or more postdoctoral positions are vacant from September 1, 2021, or soon thereafter. The position is available for a period of 2 years.

Job description

Who are we? 

The Regenerative Medicine (RM) group focuses on the development of innovative interdisciplinary approaches to control the fate of stem cells. The group is involved in translational research into novel regenerative therapies based on the use of probiotics, stem cells, and biomaterials. 


The RM group is a part of the Department of Health Science and Technology carries out multidisciplinary research, teaching and dissemination within biomedical engineering, sports science and medicine. The department has more than 250 employees and is responsible for more than 1700 students. More than 100 PhD students are enrolled in the doctoral school affiliated to the department. The researchers are organized in a number of research groups and centres, and the department has at its disposal laboratory and clean room facilities for cell growth, molecular biology, brain analysis, 3D movement analysis, respiratory and circulatory examinations, sensory and motor functions analysis, etc. All study programs at Aalborg University involve problem-based learning, organized around cases and projects. What we offer:

We offer a postdoctoral position as part of the project “PROMEAT: A truly scalable next-generation cultured meat with bioprotectives and health benefits”, which is funded under the EUROSTARS program. The successful applicant shall primarily contribute to physicochemical and biological assessment of biomaterials for engineering of adipose tissue. Using biomaterials derived from non-animal sources, the focus will be on selecting the most promising approaches for large-scale expansion and subsequent differentiation of adipose-derived stem cells into mature adipocytes. The research project will be conducted in collaboration with national and international industrial partners, with the overall goal of developing a prototype next-generation cultured meat. The selected candidate will be exposed to an inter-disciplinary research group, and is expected to contribute to other concurrent research projects, which may include opportunities for mentoring master and PhD students.


What we request:

The successful candidate for the postdoc position should possess:

  • A PhD degree in biomedical engineering, polymer chemistry, materials science, or a related area.
  • Experience in fabrication of hydrogel-based scaffolds for tissue engineering. Prior experience working with 3D bioprinting is an advantage
  • Experience in physicochemical characterization of hydrogels by e.g. spectroscopic and rheological methods 
  • Skills within mammalian cell culture, cell-based assays and molecular biology techniques
  • A track record of relevant high-quality publications within tissue engineering
  • A high proficiency in oral and written English
  • Dissemination and communication skills to work within a multidisciplinary team


The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for performing the planned experiments independently, reporting the results periodically at the group meetings and produce peer-reviewed publications. Limited teaching within the area can be expected, but also in other study programs at the university.
