One or more postdoc in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

Do you want to be part of the team setting the state-of-art agenda for climate calculations of the future? At the Technical Faculty for IT and Design, Department of Planning, one or more positions as Postdoc is available at the Danish Centre for Environmental Assessment (DCEA). The position is available from January 1 2022 or soon thereafter and until December 31 2023 with the possibility of extension. The location of work will be either Aalborg or Copenhagen.

Job description

The positions are part of the KR Foundation grant “Getting the Data Right”:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53f0WBtjUcc. The aim of the project is to provide a globally unique virtual lab and database tool for quantitative assessment of the climate effects of decision alternatives, popularly speaking ‘a climate footprint generator’, and a mechanism to ensure its continuous maintenance. Specifically, the project will update and expand the EXIOBASE hybrid LCA database

You will be part of the team setting the state-of-art agenda for climate calculations of the future, and if you are interested in making use of much more data than are used for LCA today, quantitative climate information or mass flow analysis of global production systems, one of these position may be the right one for you.

We offer positions in the following areas:

1) Quantitative Climate information and its uncertainty.

Within this area you will work on topics applied to large global input-output models for climate footprints, e.g.
uncertainty specification for raw data, uncertainty propagation and uncertainty presentation.

2) Development of automated procedures within LCA database

Development of automated procedures for harvesting and processing data for parameterization of production functions, i.e. the inputs and outputs of production processes, with the aim of increasing product/activity detail in input-output based models for life cycle assessment (examples: harvesting data from international statistics to detailing and updating agricultural, forestry, energy and transport sectors, the use of energy statistics and coefficient data to estimate fuel/energy intensities and mixes of different sectors, the use of the chemical reactions and balances to sub-divide the chemical industries).

Development of procedures to include new technologies (examples: electric vehicles, phasing out certain energy supply systems, change in working setups from physical presence to increasingly working online, cap on beef consumption, new agricultural practices such as taking out peat soils, organic waste management and carbon capture such as biochar production)

3) Mass flow analysis of global production systems

You will work on the following topics applied to large global input-output models for climate footprints:

  • Automated procedure for harvesting of global data sources on physical supply and use of resources, product, wastes and emissions, as well as temporal stock changes.
  • Simultaneous balancing of supply use tables in multiple layers, each with a specific physical or monetary dimension
For alle three areas it will be an advantage if you:
  • Hold a relevant PhD degree in data science, engineering, or economics, or similar scientific qualifications
  • Have experience with programming (python)
  • Have experience with complex quantitative modelling
  • Have a high level of English language and communication skills, both in writing and verbally
