One or more Postdocs in Experimental Research in 5G-Enabled Digital Twins and Robots

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, one or more positions as postdoc in Experimental Research in 5G-Enabled Digital Twins and Robots are open for appointment from March 1, 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter. The positions are available for 36 months. The Department of Electronic Systems consists of more than 200 employees, of which about 40 % are international and about 90 are enrolled PhD students. The Department hosts 620 students. The Department's research centres around communication, antennas, control systems, AI, sound, cybersecurity and robotics. The Department plays an active role in translating discoveries and results into practical applications with industrial partners and IPR. The Department provides teaching for several BSc and MSc programmes using a problem- and project-based learning model.

Job description

The fourth industrial revolution - or Industry 4.0 (I4.0), will introduce major shifts in the way that products will be manufactured in the future. By integrating different Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) technologies and cloud computing; the factories of the future will be equipped with highly flexible manufacturing equipment also offering a high reliability, thereby increasing the overall production output and cost efficiency. In order to succeed in achieving the most advanced and challenging production use cases, 5G-enabled autonomous mobile robotic systems will be developed. Such systems, born from the integration of 5G Edge-Cloud, autonomous mobile robots and robotic manipulators, and Digital Twins; will connect shop-floor assists (e.g., AMRs, robotic manipulators, forklifts, production lines, humans) to an edge-cloud platform by means of 5G technology. Vendor-specific fleet management systems will be implemented on the edge cloud, controlling a set of associated mobile robots. On-top, an inter-fleet management system will be integrated which coordinates the different fleets and forms an interface to the overall business systems (ERP, MES, WMS). To support the coordination of multiple robots (from the same as well as different vendors) a digital twin will be implemented. Based on real-time data from the shop-floor, this will constantly update a dynamic “common world map” which can be accessed by the fleet managers to prevent collision and optimize robot usage.

This postdoc project focuses on the design, implementation, and testing of wireless time-critical control solutions targeting real operational IIoT use cases based on mobile robots and robotic manipulators. Such solutions will make use of 5G for providing cloud-control support and interaction with a virtual “Digital twin” representation of the production system. The postdoc is expected to collaborate with other researchers and a number of industrial partners in the integration of wired wireless industrial networks and the development of different IIoT prototypes and demonstrators based on real operational industrial equipment like production lines, PLCs, I/O systems, robotic arms, IoT sensors, HD cameras, AMRs, etc. The postdoc will also investigate performance of the designed solutions over a choice of wireless technologies such as WiFi 5, public/private 4G LTE, private 5G NR sub-6GHz/mmWave, WiFi 6, MuLTEfire, or LoRa which will be available at the “AAU 5G Smart Production Lab”.

Research will be primarily experimental, but analytical and modelling work is also possible based on the performance evaluation results. Active dissemination of the research findings via live demonstrations, international conferences and high-quality journals is expected.

The ideal candidate for the position is expected to hold expertise in (at least) one of the following domains: 1) applied wireless communications, 2) robotics, 3) digital twins, 4) edge-cloud solutions; and should be capable of conducting research in the above-described areas. Experience with operational industrial equipment, PLCs, sensors, industrial wireless communication commercial equipment, Linux, C++, Python is highly appreciated. Knowledge about TSN and TSC technologies would also be desirable. Excellent level of written and spoken English is required.

Qualification requirements: 

Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
