Assistant Professor in Renewable Energy Based Smart Grids and Microgrids (2022-224-04554)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, AAU Energy, a position as Assistant Professor in Renewable Energy Based Smart Grids and Microgrids is open for appointment from August 1st 2022 or soon hereafter. The position is open for a total of 3 years. Aalborg University contributes to the knowledge building of the global society as well as the development of prosperity, welfare and culture of Danish society. AAU Energy has a very international environment and covers all areas of clean and sustainable energy systems of the future within electrical, thermal and mechatronic energy technology. AAU Energy has campuses in both Aalborg and Esbjerg, this position is located in Aalborg.  The mission is to be world leading in both research and research-based education of the energy engineers of the future. AAU Energy has approx. 300 employees of many nationalities, of which 25 are administrative staff. In addition, AAU Energy constantly has approx. 50-70 guest researchers from around the world.  Research and teaching are in the absolute world elite in the field of energy, and we have extensive and leading workshop and laboratory facilities, where research and innovation are carried out in direct collaboration with industry to a great extent.

Job description

The position is offered in relation to the research program "Microgrids" and the Assistant Professor will be positioned to the section for “Electric Power Systems and Microgrids”.

Research areas will be within renewable energies and microgrid clusters which is a cross-disciplinary topic that brings together a collection of diverse approaches to do with electric power systems, power electronics, and control. 
The position will be aligned to future offshore wind power plants with microgrid functionalities, developments and research in connection with cooperation with Turkey, therefore having similar experiences in international projects is a must.

The successful candidate must have a solid background and research experience in offshore wind power plants including planning, electrical design, capacity estimation, and hierarchical control. Experience with extended power flow formulations and fast-time domain shooting methods is required. Energy management optimization, and stability and power quality analysis are an asset.
Experience in prototyping small-scale test-benches using dSPACE, and hardware-in-the-loop through real time digital simulators such as RTDS/RSCAD are required. Working experience with projects development and international research will be considered an advantage. 
Finally, the position requires that the candidate have a very strong publication record in highly-ranked journals and experience in teaching/supervising with a problem-based learning approach. 

Teaching activities within the position include lecturing, supervision, coordination, and planning primarily at BSc, MSc and PhD levels secondarily in other study programs at the University. The applicant should envision teaching and student project supervision by using problem-based learning. Fluency in spoken and written English is necessary, and medium level of Danish language proficiency is an advantage.

Qualification requirements:

Appointment as an Assistant Professor presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.

Appointment as an Assistant Professor cannot exceed a period of four years in total in a temporary position (appointment at Assistant Professor level cannot exceed a period of eight years in total in Denmark).

  • Publications you wish to be considered by the assessment committee. You may attach up to 5 publications.
  • A specification of your teaching qualifications relative to the teaching portfolio. If this is not enclosed you must include an explanation for its absence.
  • References/recommendations.

Shortlisting will be applied. After the review of any objections regarding the assessment committee, the head of department, with assistance from the chair of the assessment committee, selects the candidates to be assessed.
