Integrated PhD Stipend in Intelligent Data Dashboards for Healthcare (7-22050)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology, Aalborg University, an integrated PhD stipend is available within the study program of Media, Architecture & Design. The PhD stipend will be situated at Aalborg University. The PhD stipend is open for appointment from 1 September 2022. The Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology has as its goal the development of an innovative cluster of engineering-based environments for education and research which integrates creativity, engineering and technology within the disciplines of architecture, urban design, industrial design, digital design and interactive media. The department is a leading research and educational environment in Denmark that addresses the challenge of the interplay between creativity and technology and develops new areas in research and education directed towards the end-user.

Job description

The PhD project will focus on novel human computer interaction solutions that address the needs of healthcare professionals in charge of in-hospital stroke care quality. The interactions of the clinicians will include virtual assistants in tandem with AI-driven dashboards based on the world’s largest stroke registry. The four year EU Horizon project that is funding the PhD is highly interdisciplinary and supported by collaborators providing expertise on legal and ethical considerations, natural language processing, data mining, data interoperability according to FAIR principles, and access to patients. The PhD position follows a 4+4 semester model meaning that during the first two years (four semesters) the student will be half-time working on or rather finishing their MSc and the other half on their PhD. The remaining four semesters are spent full-time on the PhD.

Applicant profiles should reflect a knack for interdisciplinarity. Concretely, we are interested in candidates with profiles covering (i) user-centred design, including experience in conducting ethnographic user studies, (ii) development of novel human computer action approaches - preferable in Unity (C#) or React (Javascript), and R/R-Shiny or D3. (iii) qualitative and quantitative user analysis, modelling and machine learning. (iv) knowledge about data visualisation, explainable AI, and storytelling is a bonus.

The candidate is expected to be highly motivated, have excellent English skills both verbal and written, an empathic personality to be working with clinicians from many countries, and ideally a track record of having published in scientific venues.

The PhD student will work within a dynamic project team consisting of fellow PhD student(s) and the principal investigator, Associate Professor Hendrik Knoche. Scientific dissemination is expected to focus on venues such as CHI, mobileHCI, CSCW, IUI, IJHCS, and Pervasive Health.

The following documents must be enclosed in the application:

  • Motivated application
  • BSc diploma and grade transcripts from the Master’s programme
  • CV
  • Project description
  • A list of outstanding ECTS points in the Master’s programme (can be attached in the boxes for references or publications)

You may obtain further information from Associate Professor Hendrik Knoche, Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology, phone: +45 9940 2661, email: hk@create.aau.dk concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

Integrated PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who have not yet completed a Master’s degree and who wish to begin the PhD study in connection with the Master study. Thus a prerequisite for acceptance is that the candidate is enrolled in a relevant Master’s programme.

It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

The stipend consists of two parts, A and B. During part A you are enrolled simultaneous in the Master’s programme and in the PhD programme. The stipend consists of two SU-PhD Grants per month (SU=The Danish students’ Grants and Loans Scheme). One SU-PhD grant equals DKK 6.397 kr. (2022 level). SU-PhD Grants are paid for a maximum of two years. When the Master’s degree has been obtained, you will be employed for two years as a PhD fellow according to the present collective agreement. Part B has a maximum duration of two years.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
