At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a position as postdoc in Simple beam-steerable antennas is open for appointment from September 1, 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for 24 months. The Department of Electronic Systems consists of more than 200 employees, of which about 40 % are international and about 90 are enrolled PhD students. The Department hosts 620 students. The Department's research centres around communication, antennas, control systems, AI, sound, cybersecurity and robotics. The Department plays an active role in translating discoveries and results into practical applications with industrial partners and IPR. The Department provides teaching for several BSc and MSc programmes using a problem- and project-based learning model.

Job description

In the millimeter-wave band, beam-steerable antennas are preferred to establish reliable communications with mobile or multiple users to improve channel capacity and have been widely used in mobile and satellite communications. The conventional and classic beam-steerable antennas are phased array antennas, where cumbersome and lossy phase shifters are connected to antenna elements to offer tunable phase shifts to control the radiation beam. Reflectarray and transmitarray antennas are good options, due to their simple configurations, low losses, and high gains, to offer scanning beams by either electric (e.g., loading active components such as PIN diode, RF switches, etc.) or mechanical (e.g., loading mechanical components such as motor, or mechanically rotating the phase-shifting surfaces, etc.).

The research focus of the post-doctoral position is in the area of developments of high-efficiency and low-cost beam-steerable reflectarray and transmitarray antennas for satellite communications. Since some beam-steerable reflectarray and transmitarray antennas have been reported in the open literature, the main work is to propose novel, high-efficiency, and low-cost solutions to manipulate the phase shifts of unit cells of reflectarray and transmitarray antennas, thereby steering the radiation beam dynamically. As the application scenarios are for satellite communications, the beam switching speed, stabilities, cost, and efficiency of the beam-steerable antennas should be carefully considered. Moreover, artificial intelligence will also be involved to maximize the gain (efficiency) of the beam-steerable reflectarray and transmitarray antennas by optimizing the phase distributions of the reflectarray and transmitarray antennas.

Qualification requirements: 

Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
