Assistant Professor on Tenure Track in Machine Learning

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a position as Assistant Professor in Machine Learning is open for appointment from November 1, 2022, or soon hereafter. In electronics engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the societal relevance of its research programmes. The Department of Electronic Systems consists of more than 200 employees, of which about 40 % are international and about 90 are enrolled PhD students. The Department hosts 620 students. The Department's excellent research infrastructures and facilities accentuate its global position in teaching and research. The Department's research centres around communication, antennas, control systems, AI, sound, cyber security, and robotics. The Department plays an active role in translating discoveries and results into practical applications with industrial partners and IPR. The Department provides teaching for several BSc and MSc programmes using a problem- and project-based learning model.

Job description

We seek to appoint an Assistant Professor on Tenure Track to take part in research and knowledge exchange and develop the Department's research activities and scientific discovery within our subject field.

The position requires internationally recognized research experience in at least one of the following areas:

  • Algorithms for communication-efficient, robust, and stable machine learning 
  • Scalable and privacy-preserving algorithms
  • Machine learning for IoT

The main tasks and responsibilities include:

  • demonstrate intellectual originality, develop their research profile, and provide valuable contributions to science.
  • provide research-based teaching and supervision within at least one subject areas.
  • participate in grant application activities regarding research funds.
  • coordinate his/her own projects and contribute to an active academic environment.

The selected candidate should demonstrate development potential in science and have peer-reviewed publications in recognised journals and books or anthologies.

Under the leadership of others, you can plan and carry out individual teaching and supervision activities with a focus on the students' learning. You have an interest in collaborating with external partners and experience from participating in grant applications. You have also contributed to workplace well-being, collaboration, equal treatment, diversity, and a good working environment.

Tenure-track:

Tenure-track assistant professors are appointed for a period of six years with the prospect of performance-based promotion to a tenured position as Associate Professor. Tenure-track assistant professors are expected to have international academic standing, demonstrating acclaimed competitive research, and/or have a recognized high potential for future impact.

If appointed on tenure-track, an internal assessment committee will conduct a mid-term evaluation after 3 years, and an external assessment committee will conduct a final review after 5.5 years. If the final review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor

Qualification requirements:

Appointment as an Assistant Professor presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.

Appointment as an Assistant Professor cannot exceed a period of four years in total in a temporary position (appointment at Assistant Professor level cannot exceed a period of eight years in total in Denmark).

  • A statement outlining your reasons for applying, and intentions and visions with, the position.
  • Your curriculum vitae, including personal data, educational background, scientific qualifications, dissemination skills, participation in committees and boards, and additional qualifications relevant for the position.
  • Copies of relevant diplomas (Master of Science and PhD). On request you could be asked for an official English translation.
  • A complete list of publications.
  • Publications you wish to be considered by the assessment committee. You may attach up to 5 publications.
  • A specification of your teaching qualifications relative to the teaching portfolio. If this is not enclosed you must include an explanation for its absence.
  • References/recommendations.

Shortlisting will be applied. After the review of any objections regarding the assessment committee, the head of department, with assistance from the chair of the assessment committee, selects the candidates to be assessed. All applicants will be informed as to whether they will advance to assessment or not.
