2022-224-04814 One or more Research Assistants in Sustainable Construction Management and Digitalisation

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of the Built Environment (BUILD) at Aalborg University’s campus in Copenhagen one or more positions as research assistants in sustainable construction management and digitalisation is open for appointment from 15 September 2022 or soon hereafter and for a period of 3 years. The Department of the Built Environment focuses on the technical and scientific disciplines within the built environment. Research areas span from Indoor Environment and Energy Efficient buildings, Wind Turbines, Structural Design, Structural Materials, Geotechnical Engineering, Wave Energy to Traffic along with many other areas. The research is conducted in a national as well as an international research environment. The department takes on contract research for both public institutions and private companies. The research projects involve both theoretical research and in situ measurements along with laboratory experiments. As an employee at the Department of the Built Environment, you become a part of an international research environment, where focus is on innovation, knowledge sharing and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Job description

The Danish construction and real estate industry is in the middle of a tremendous sustainable transition that will change its practices, business models and outputs. Delivering workable digital solutions and data that support a lifecycle approach on built facilities is crucial for the cost-effective transition of projects and companies within architecture, engineering, construction, operations and asset management.

To meet the increasing need for research, education and industry collaboration BUILD is looking for one or more research assistants within the cross-disciplinary field of sustainable construction management and digitalisation. Research assistants contribute to research projects in the group and assist senior staff with interviews, literature studies, field studies, surveys, data assessment and reporting. Current tasks include, e.g.:

  • Developing the software tool LCCbyg for life cycle costing in buildings and urban developments
  • Performing conformity check with regard to life cycle costing of building projects using the DGNB certification scheme
  • Collecting and processing data related to the performance of buildings in a lifecycle perspective
  • Collecting and processing data related to waste and productivity in construction
  • Undertaking socio-technical analyses of the role of digital tools in procurement, design, construction, and operation of built facilities

The position is open in the Research Group for Construction Management and Innovation at the Division of Civil Engineering and Construction Management. The Research Group for Construction Management and Innovation adopts a socio-technical perspective on management and informatics in the built environment. The position requires knowledge on aspects of digitalisation and sustainability as well as insights into the Danish construction industry and property market.

Candidates are expected to have a background within procurement, design, construction, and operation of built facilities, but the position is open to candidates with other backgrounds like economics or informatics, too. Successful candidate must have experience with qualitative as well as quantitative methods.

Candidates with some knowledge on one or more of the following areas will be preferred:

  • Sustainable construction e.g. the sustainable certification scheme DGNB
  • Construction economics including life cycle costing
  • Digital data models e.g. classification systems and building information modelling
  • Quantitative research methods such as data analytics
  • Sociotechnical theories to understand and explore management and informatics in the built environment

There will be good opportunities for the development of academic career for the chosen candidates

Candidates should have the ability to work in a team as well as independently and be good at networking. Good communication skills in writing and orally are essential – especially in Danish – in order to facilitate field studies, conduct DGNB conformity checks and have contact with e.g. Danish authorities. Knowledge on socio-technical and social science theories will be an advantage. The required level of qualifications is at master level.

Appointment to Research Assistant may be for a period of up to three years. Reappointment may be made, but a Research Assistant can only be appointed to Research Assistant for a period of maximum three years. Employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance's current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics.
