At the Department of Culture and Learning, Aalborg University, a professor position is available as of August 1st 2023, or shortly thereafter. This is a permanent full-time position that includes research, research management and teaching. The position is in the area of culture, media and aesthetics in the English-speaking world.

Job description

For appointment as a professor, the ideal candidate is expected to:

  • teach, supervise, and examine students in relevant modules in bachelor's and master's degree programmes in English, at the highest international level
  • supervise PhD students at the highest international level
  • conduct research and publish research products at a high-quality level in internationally recognized venues
  • handle research management of researchers with different research and cultural backgrounds
  • coordinate and participate in external research networks and partnerships (national and international), and obtain external funds of strategic importance
  • initiate and develop knowledge collaboration related to the position's scientific portfolio
  • contribute in a positive and constructive manner to the overall activities and working environment of the Department of Culture and Learning.

In terms of research, the position includes research at an international level within culture, media and aesthetics in the English-speaking world, and the applicants are expected to have research experience within at least one of the following areas: 

  • Popular culture and media
  • Interactions between media and society
  • Aesthetic and cultural expressions related to areas such as science fiction and fantasy.

In relation to research, the applicant is expected to document:

  • experience, competences, and achievements demonstrating the ability to produce research of the highest international quality
  • a research plan that harmonizes with the Department of Culture and Learning’s strategy and shows the applicant's plans for developing new research products and projects
  • experience, competences, and achievements demonstrating the ability to initiate and develop external (national and international) partnerships
  • experience with obtaining external funds of strategic importance
  • experience, competences, and achievements demonstrating the applicant's ability to engage in relevant research partnerships.

In relation to teaching, the applicant is expected to document:

  • experience in the management and development of study programmes
  • experience, competences, and achievements demonstrating the ability to provide the highest-level instruction within the area of the English programme, with various pedagogical considerations and approaches, including supervision, conducting seminars, lectures etc.
  • experience in supervising of PhD students
  • at Aalborg University our learning approach is problem-based learning (PBL). Documented experience with this learning approach is therefore preferred but is not a prerequisite.

The applicant is expected to document the ability to teach, supervise and assess both written and oral presentations in English. The applicant is expected to acquire relevant linguistic competence in Danish for academic purposes within an agreed timeframe. 

The position is primarily affiliated with the research group Literature, Media, and Society (LMS) that has a range of research interests within the following main areas: 

  • The interactions between literature, media, and society broadly conceived
  • The aesthetic and cultural expressions of literature and media.

In terms of personal qualities, the applicant is expected to have solid cooperative abilities as well as the ability to establish and maintain productive relationships with researchers of various research and cultural backgrounds. A national as well as an international network is thus preferred.

Applicants must be prepared to actively participate in all aspects of the day-to-day activities of the department and study programmes.

Professorship
The position of professor is a permanent position with obligation to research, teaching and publication/academic dissemination.

Applicants to the professorship are required to provide documentation of a substantial amount of original scientific production at international level, and documentation of significant contribution to the development of the research area in question. It is equally important that applicants are able to undertake research management or other kinds of management, pedagogical counselling and supervision as well as academic assessment tasks.

The application must contain the following:

  • A motivated application
  • A research plan
  • A CV
  • Complete publication list, marking the attached publications, to be taken into consideration in connection with the assessment. A maximum of ten publications may be attached.
  • In case the applicant attaches publications elaborated ind collaboration with co-authors, a co-author statement must be enclosed, specifying the applicant's contribution to the joint work. The co-author statement must be signed by at least one of the co-authors. Template co-author declaration.
  • Documentation of teaching qualifications. Guidance Teaching portfolio.
  • Copies of relevant diplomas (Master of Science and PhD).

Assessment
All candidates will be assessed by an assessment committee. Applicants may subsequently be summoned to an interview and/or trial lecture.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not. The selected applicants will be informed of the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will have the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that applies to the applicant in question. When the employment process has been terminated, a final rejection will be sent to the applicants who are not considered for the position.
