Assistant professor in Music Therapy

At the Department of Communication and Psychology, the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities, Aalborg University, a position is as Assistant Professor will be open for appointment as of August 15th, 2023. The position is full time and available for a period of 4 years.

Job description

The position will complement and extend the existing expertise within Music Therapy. The selected candidate will conduct research and teaching within at least two or more of the following areas: 

  • Music Therapy theory, ethics & supervision
  • Music Therapy Instruction, Accompaniment & Improvisation
  • Music Therapy & ethics
  • Music Therapy & dementia
  • Music Therapy intervention development. 

The appointment will be a fixed-term (4 years), full-time position, which will include both research and teaching activities. 

During the employment as an Assistant Professor, the selected candidate will be expected to:

  • Deliver high quality teaching, supervision, and associated examination, as required across the range of modules offered on the Art, Health and Technology programme
  • Undertake research and publish research output of an internationally recognized quality.
  • Engage in external research networks and collaborations.
  • Engage in knowledge collaboration within the portfolio of the position.
  • Participate positively and constructively in the day-to-day activities of the Department of Communication and Psychology. 

In terms of research, the position includes research and applicants are expected to have research experience in at least one of the following areas:

  • Music Therapy theory, ethics & supervision
  • Music Therapy Instruction, Accompaniment & Improvisation
  • Music therapy & dementia. 

In relation to research, applicants should document:

  • Experience, skills and achievements that demonstrate the ability or potential to produce high quality research outputs and publish in international journals.
  • A personal research plan which is consistent with the Department of Communication and Psychology research strategy and demonstrates the potential to develop new research projects.
  • Experience, skills and achievements that demonstrate the ability or potential to develop external and/or international networks and collaborations.
  • Experience, skills and achievements that demonstrate the ability or potential to engage in activities with actors outside academia to enhance the impact of research. 

In relation to teaching, applicants should document:

  • Experience, skills, and achievements that demonstrate the ability or potential to deliver high quality teaching, using a range of pedagogical approaches including problem-based learning, project supervision, lectures, master class specifically within music therapy theory, music instruction skills, clinical music therapy skills, etc.
  • Ability to teach, supervise, and assess written and oral performances in Danish.
  • Given the international elements in some of the Danish degree programmes, the successful applicant must be able to teach in English as well as Danish. International applicants are expected to learn Danish within a foreseeable timeframe.
  • Aalborg University works with a problem-based learning approach (PBL) and documented experience with this learning approach will be welcome but is not a prerequisite. 

In relation to general competences, applicants should also:

  • Document experience, skills or achievements which demonstrate the ability or potential to work collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Participate fully in the day-to-day activities of the Department, section and research groups, and encourage and foster a positive and collegial working environment.
  • Document experience with organization and administration within research and education.
  • Demonstrate great written and oral communication skills. 

The position will primarily be attached to the section Arts, Aesthetics, Health, which focuses its research on the following main themes:

  • Music Therapy
  • Aesthetics & Experience
  • Art & Technology
  • Holistic & existential health.

Applicants should be able to work together with others and be capable of creating and sustaining relations with other researchers in an international research environment. Both national and international research networks will be advantageous. Applicants need to be willing to participate actively in all aspects of daily work in the Department. A position as assistant professor is a fixed-term training position which includes an obligation to carry out research and teaching activities. To a limited extent, additional tasks may be defined by the University. The appointment includes a requirement to attend a course in university pedagogy for assistant professors organised by the University.

The employment as assistant professor must not exceed a total period of four years at the same institution (a maximum of six years at assistant professor level at AAU and a maximum of eight years at assistant professor level in Denmark).

Applicants for the assistant professorship are required to possess academic qualifications; for example a PhD degree or similar academic qualifications.

  • Documentation of your teaching qualifications Guidance Teaching portfolio.
  • Copies of your degree certificates (including Master’s and PhD certificates).

Applicants will be assessed by an assessment committee.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select applicants for assessment. Before the shortlisting takes place, all applicants will get the opportunity to comment on the composition of the assessment committee. All applicants will be informed whether they are selected for assessment or not.

All assessed applicants will get the opportunity to comment on their own assessment, and may be invited to an interview and/or asked to give a trial lecture.

When the employment process has been terminated, a final rejection will be sent to the applicants who are not considered for the position.
