At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, AAU Energy, a full-time position as Professor in Carbon Management and Negative Emission Technologies, is available for appointment from 1st October 2025, or soon hereafter.

AAU Energy is a dynamic engineering research department in continuous growth and inspiring surroundings. AAU Energy has a very international environment and covers all areas of clean and sustainable energy systems of the future within electrical, thermal and mechatronic energy technology. AAU Energy has campuses in both Aalborg and Esbjerg, this position is in Aalborg.

The mission is to be world leading in both research and research-based education of the energy engineers of the future. AAU Energy has approx. 300 employees of many nationalities, of which 25 are administrative staff. In addition, AAU Energy constantly hosts guest researchers from around the world.

Research and teaching are in the absolute world elite in the field of energy, and we have extensive and leading workshop and laboratory facilities, where research and innovation are carried out in direct collaboration with industry to a great extent. The position is offered in relation to the establishment of a new research group and the Professor will be positioned to the section for “Thermal Engineering”.

We are seeking a highly qualified candidate for a professor position in the field of Carbon Management and Negative Emission Technologies. The ideal candidate has a strong fundamental and applied research background, demonstrated by significant contributions to high-impact publications, the ability to establish experimental research facilities and infrastructure, and leadership in research fields including carbon capture from point sources, including thermochemical conversion processes, direct air capture, and process integration analysis at energy system-level. The position is supported by a start-up grant to build a small research group and associated experimental facilities. However, it is expected that the applicant can secure significant external grants to secure the group's future growth and operation. Experience in securing substantial external research funding within the mentioned research fields and managing multidisciplinary teams is essential.

The position requires an internationally recognized researcher with experience with national and international research projects. The candidate is expected to establish a new research group to carry out groundbreaking research in the development of next-generation engineered carbon dioxide removal technologies. Aligned with the AAU Energy spirit, the new research group should with time cover research facilities covering lab-scale and pilot-scale facilities.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of excellence in teaching and supervision at the undergraduate, graduate, and PhD levels. Experience in curriculum development, and innovative teaching methodologies, is highly valued. Recognition through teaching awards and strong student evaluations will be considered an asset.
Applicants should demonstrate strong leadership skills, the ability to foster a dynamic and inclusive research environment, and a commitment to advancing sustainable carbon-based solutions through research, education, and public engagement.

Qualification requirements
Applicants must be able to document a high degree of original academic production at an international level and experience from teaching at different levels. Including tests/exams, course/study programme management as well as contributions to the development of teaching activities and teaching material.

Emphasis is placed on the extent, to which the applicant, has developed the academic discipline from a research and teaching perspective.

Emphasis may moreover be placed on the applicant’s ability to carry out and develop research-based public-sector consultancy. Also, emphasis will be placed on an assessment of the applicant’s ability to perform research and teaching management tasks and possibly fulfil other functions, for example in relation to the university’s external cooperation.

Emphasis will also be placed on the applicant's ability to undertake pedagogical supervision, supervision and academic assessment work.
