Associate professor in Analytical and Clinical Metabolomics
The Department of Clinical Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, Aalborg University, invites applications for the position of Associate Professor in Analytical and Clinical Metabolomics, starting 1 September 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. This is a permanent, part-time position with a workload of 7.4 hours per week.
As an Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Medicine, you will be part of a large, interdisciplinary research group, collaborating closely with the university hospital across various medical specialties. The department is connected to approximately 40 research units, each specializing in a different area, and this position is linked to the Department of Molecular Diagnostics (AfMD). Your office will be located at Aalborg University Hospital North, Reberbansgade 15, 9000 Aalborg. We expect to relocate to Hospitalsbyen in Aalborg East during 2025.
Your work tasks
As an Associate Professor in Analytical and Clinical Metabolomics, you will actively contribute to the department’s research in translational and systems medicine, focusing on understanding molecular pathophysiological mechanisms and identifying diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers for diseases and treatment responses. Your responsibilities will include developing, teaching, and managing content related to experimental design, sample preparation, and data acquisition using NMR-based metabolomics. You will also work on metabolite identification and annotation, as well as applying advanced analytical methods to investigate biomolecular mechanisms underlying major diseases such as pancreatic, liver, endometrial, and ovarian cancers, liver fibrosis, and COVID-19. Additionally, you will engage in research-based teaching and student supervision, enhancing the department’s academic environment. Through your internationally recognized research, you will support the department’s development both independently and through collaboration.
Your main tasks will consist of:
- Conducting independent, high-quality research recognized at the international level, with results published in peer-reviewed journals and shared within both national and global academic communities.
- Initiating and overseeing advanced statistical analyses that integrate clinical, metabolomics, and other multi-omics datasets.
- Leading efforts in high-dimensional and complex data analysis by developing and critically assessing innovative methods to enhance the interpretation of metabolomic data.
- Playing a central role in European and international research projects, including PAIR (Pandemic information to support rapid response), and initiatives focused on discovering novel biomarkers for monitoring hepatitis B progression and early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma.
- Supervising Master’s and PhD students, while contributing to the design and delivery of research-based teaching—primarily in NMR-based metabolomics and metabolomics data analysis—for Master’s and PhD programs.
- Participating in assessment tasks and committee work at Aalborg University.
- Actively contributing to the acquisition of external research funding.
Teaching responsibilities will primarily focus on biomedicine and translational medicine, but may also extend to other academic programs across the University.
Your Competencies
You have established yourself as a prominent researcher within the field of clinical metabolomics, and you possess documented solid research qualifications. Your expertise includes the development of disease models to investigate molecular pathophysiological mechanisms and identify diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers for diseases and therapeutic responses. Experience working on large-scale initiatives, such as EU-funded projects, is highly regarded.
You are an effective communicator with experience in supervising at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD levels. We especially value completed pedagogical courses in supervision or related areas. You also bring documented experience in sample preparation using NMR spectrometry, applying absolute quantification in metabolomics, and handling and analyzing data in metabolic research. In addition, you have extensive expertise in metabolomic data analysis, big data handling, machine learning, or statistical modeling, all of which are essential for this role.
You have a solid foundation in molecular medicine and clinical research, and you are highly skilled at addressing clinical challenges through molecular methodologies.
You are a dedicated professional with excellent communication skills and the ability to foster trust-based relationships with both students and colleagues. As a supervisor, you are competent, motivating, and supportive. You are committed to contributing to the advancement of the department’s research and educational goals at an internationally competitive level, while helping to maintain a positive and collaborative work environment. You engage naturally in interdisciplinary collaboration within the department, faculty, and across the university.
