At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, AAU Energy, a position as Professor in Reliable Fluid Power Technology is available for appointment from October 1st, 2025 or soon hereafter.

Who we are
Aalborg University contributes to the knowledge building of the global society as well as the development of prosperity, welfare, and culture of Danish society. This is accomplished through research, research-based education, public sector services and knowledge collaboration. Aalborg University educates students for the future and activities are based on a dynamic and transformative collaboration with the surrounding community.

AAU Energy is a rapidly growing and vibrant engineering research department with a strong international presence, specializing in all aspects of clean and sustainable energy systems, including electrical, thermal, and mechatronic energy technologies. With campuses in Aalborg and Esbjerg, this position will be located at Aalborg campus.

The mission is to be world leading in both research and research-based education of the energy engineers of the future. AAU Energy has approx. 300 employees of many nationalities. In addition, AAU Energy constantly has approx. 50-70 guest researchers from around the world.

Research and teaching are in the absolute world elite in the field of energy, and we have extensive and leading workshop and laboratory facilities, where research and innovation are carried out in direct collaboration with industry to a great extent.

The position is offered in relation to the research group "Fluid Power”, and the Professor will be positioned to the section for “Mechatronic Systems”.

The position requires research qualifications at doctor level within fluid power and mechatronic systems, with a particular emphasis on the reliability and fault detection of fluid power components and systems. The research is expected to address both theoretical and applied aspects of developing reliable, robust, fault-tolerant, and energy-efficient hydraulic systems, using analytical, numerical, and experimental approaches. A central focus will be on improving the operational reliability of fluid power systems through early fault detection, diagnostics, and advanced monitoring techniques, with the aim of reducing downtime and predicting and increasing system reliability across applications.

In addition to reliability-related topics, the position includes research within general fluid power technologies and systems, energy-saving methods and efficiency optimization in hydraulic applications, digital fluid power systems including digital displacement pumps/motors, systems based on fast-switching valves, and hybrid fluid power systems. The professor is also expected to contribute to the development and application of model-based analysis, simulation, and optimization of fluid power and mechatronic systems, all within a system-level and mechatronic perspective that integrates mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and control engineering disciplines.

The research is expected to contribute both to emerging renewable energy sectors such as wind and wave energy - where hydraulic systems are increasingly critical for handling large dynamic loads and ensuring long-term reliability - and to more conventional applications in e.g. mobile machinery and industry. Collaboration with industrial partners and international research networks will be an important element of the position, and the successful candidate is expected to take an active role in strengthening these relations through research, innovation, and joint development activities.

Teaching will primarily be in Energy Engineering and the Mechatronic Control Engineering specialization, specifically focusing on mechatronic systems, fluid power, optimization and control, but also in other study areas at the University.

The applicant is expected to have a strong professional and educational background within the majority of the following areas, with a professional focus on the first topics listed:

• A PhD degree in fluid power or a closely related area and has worked with modeling, analysis, simulation and control of dynamical systems
• Experience and a track record working with reliability modeling (FMEA/FTA, lifetime assessment, mechanical wear, etc.) and fault detection and diagnostics of fluid power systems and components
• Documented research experience in fluid power systems, including component-level and system-level understanding, both in relation to reliability, fault detection, modelling, analysis, model-based design and control
• Competence in modeling and simulation of mechatronic systems in general, including system optimization
• Practical and theoretical experience with advanced control design, particularly for nonlinear or hybrid fluid power and mechatronic systems
• Experience with laboratory work and testing of mechatronic systems in general
• Have knowledge of renewable energy systems, like wind turbines and wave energy applications, in which fluid power technology is used
• A solid track record of teaching and supervision of students on all levels (bachelor, master and PhDs)
• A solid track record of international publications and project leadership
• Demonstrated ability to attract external funding and manage research projects in collaboration with industry
• Motivation and capacity to contribute actively to teaching and supervision in the department’s educational programs

Qualification requirements
Applicants must be able to document a high degree of original academic production at an international level and experience from teaching at different levels. Including tests/exams, course/study programme management as well as contributions to the development of teaching activities and teaching material.

Emphasis is placed on the extent, to which the applicant, has developed the academic discipline from a research and teaching perspective.

Emphasis may moreover be placed on the applicant’s ability to carry out and develop research-based public-sector consultancy. Also, emphasis will be placed on an assessment of the applicant’s ability to perform research and teaching management tasks and possibly fulfil other functions, for example in relation to the university’s external cooperation.

Emphasis will also be placed on the applicant's ability to undertake pedagogical supervision, supervision and academic assessment work.
