At the Technical Faculty of IT & Design, Department of Architecture, Design & Media Technology, Aalborg University, Copenhagen Campus, a position as Research Assistant in Virtual reality to help neurodivergent children and adolescents, 14,8 hours per week, is available for a period of 19 months as of 01.02.2026 or soon thereafter

The Department of Architecture, Design, and Media Technology has as its goal the development of an innovative cluster of engineering-based environments for education and research which integrate creativity, engineering and technology within the disciplines of architecture, urban design, industrial design, digital design and interactive media. The department is a leading research and educational environment in Denmark that addresses the challenge of the interplay between creativity and technology, and develops new areas in research and education directed towards the end-user.

Your work tasks
You will be employed as a Research Assistant on the EU-funded project ABA-VR: A Behaviour Management Training through Virtual Reality, conducted in collaboration with partners in the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Spain, North Macedonia, and Slovenia. Your work will focus on designing, developing, and implementing immersive VR simulations in Unity that support students in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) education when preparing to work with children and adolescents with autism.

The position involves full development responsibility across networking, asset integration, and spatial audio design. In addition to technical development, you will contribute to ongoing research on how XR technologies can support learning, communication, and behaviour management skills for individuals with ASD, including collaboration with local stakeholders such as special education schools. The role also includes supporting iterative user testing, data collection, dissemination activities, and participation in project meetings, workshops, and internal reporting throughout the project period.

Your competencies
We are looking for a colleague with solid technical skills in Unity development, particularly within VR and XR, who can work confidently with networked solutions and multi-user environments. You should be comfortable working with 3D modelling tools such as Blender or Maya and understand how to integrate and optimise visual assets and spatial audio for immersive learning experiences. Experience with research and development of XR technologies for individuals with autism or other developmental conditions is an advantage, as is familiarity with collaborating across disciplines and cultural contexts in international projects.

As a person, you are curious, open, and motivated by creating solutions that will be used in real educational settings. You work independently and take initiative, while also being a reliable and constructive team member who contributes to a positive and collaborative working environment. Clear and confident communication in English is essential, both in technical coordination and in reporting within the consortium.

Who we are
You will join the Multisensory Experience Lab at Aalborg University Copenhagen, part of the Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology (CREATE) within the Technical Faculty of IT and Design. CREATE is located in Copenhagen’s Sydhavn and in Aalborg by the waterfront, and consists of four research sections spanning architecture, industrial design and media technology.

At the Multisensory Experience Lab, we explore how interactive technologies can simulate and augment human senses through a human-centred approach. Our work focuses on developing XR solutions that enhance learning, communication, and accessibility for diverse user groups. You will be part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and internationally connected research environment aiming to create meaningful real-world impact.
